I have a 1.5VVT Yaris T Sport and I am only managing 30MPG around town, soes this seem about right. PS I do have a faulty Lambda sensor, is it possible this is effecting MPG?

Ta!

Yes the lambda could be causing it as it might not be fueling correctly. However a lot of factors can affect mpg, including how you drive and how you are working mpg out.

I understand driving style has a large affect on consumption I was just wandering whether the figure is about right for fairly frugal driving. I am using the on board MPG calculator.

Around town seems fair, have you taken the car on a long run lately to see what it can achieve?

No but it revs to 4500 thousand at 70MPH due to short gearing!

30MPG around town seems fine, it's about the most inefficient driving scenario there is. Get it on the open road and it should see 45-50mpg I'd have thought

30mpg round town sounds pretty good to me. My 1.8 Corsa got 21mpg the last time I filled it up, that was all heavy town driving. On a run it will get 36.

Don't think you will see more than 40mpg on the mway either

Fix the lambda first, otherwise who knows what it's doing. COuld just be throwing fuel at the problem.
30 around town isn't bad. Check out "real mpg" website to see what your car SHOULD get.

In addition to fixing the Lambda fault, is the car kept well serviced? Have you checked that your tyres are at the correct pressures?

No I have just brought it but it had Full SH. It needs a service now so I will do it myself and check the tyre pressures. I think they need 30PSI all round? not sure.

Varies from car to car. Check in your owner's manual if you have one. The correct tyre pressures can also usually be found on a sticker on the inside of the petrol flap, or a sticker on the edge of the driver's door/ b-pillar when the door is opened.

Gonna sound silly, but basics do work. Try running it with the air-con off, earlier changes and excess weight from junk in the boot etc. But 30 does seem reasonable for that car in town conditions though.

+1 into higher gears as soon as.... correct tyre pressures (which so many folks tend to forget) and most of all.... traffic light grand prix are for the tw*ts....

Top evidence for me not to get a small car every time I inadvertently moan about fuel costs and someone says...well you will keep buying ridiculous cars! I get 32 mpg out of a 3.5 litre and that includes spanking it for a mile or so when I fancy and never letting anyone beat me at the lights!

My girlfriend has the very same car. Gets about 30-35mpg around town.
If you want better you will have to adjust your driving style.

My wife's old Clio 1.6 sees 23mpg on lots of short trips from cold.
