For how long have you nursed a dying clutch?

As I sit here contemplating just how much fun its going to be changing a clutch on a mid-engined car within the next weekend or so...

Mine went 'soft' yesterday during a bit of a bootfull onto a dual carriageway, I knew it was coming as its done very well to get to the 122k its on in a sporty type of car, but still a bit annoying. I can drive round it at the moment, so long as I keep off putting a high load through it in higher gears.

I wonder how long people have managed to drive round a slipping clutch? Quite an interesting challenge, makes you nice and smooth - I reckon I'll be getting excellent MPG between now and when I change it!

Roughly 400m that it took to go down the main straight at Knockhill, it was pretty much curtains going into the second gear corner at the end

About 15k miles in the MR2 since it started slipping in 5th to when i sold it and the new clutch was put on.

Was getting pretty bad by then though.

My missus did a year in her puma dispite my constant moaning when I drove it (which is anytime we are both in the car.....)

About 3K in my MGB. It was an engine out job so not cheap to have done. The garage showed me the clutch when it was out

The clutch on my MX5 started to slip during my first track session at my first drift competition - a two day event and I spent most of it watching, so I'd have enough clutch for the competition and the six hour drive home.

By being extremely gentle and using inertia I managed to get it to do this:



I managed to get it home too, but mostly in third gear as higher gears were slipping.

I got through a clutch every 3000 miles on that car until I upgraded to a bigger diameter clutch from a 1.8 and stuck a turbo on it to reduce clutch abuse.

I imagine it's exactly as much fun as changing the clutch in a front engined Celica.

The MR2 shouldn't be particularly hard to change the clutch on - it's just a transverse transaxle setup like a FWD car. In my experience longitudinal engined cars tend to be harder work.

I spent a week in a Porsche 968 without clutch hydraulics, does that count? I could get it moving in gear with the starter, and after that changing gear was pretty easy with careful rev matching. I'd try and time my junction approach to avoid the red lights, and didn't have to commute.
