2.0l Petrol Engine - Most economical motorway car

Hi all

I recently (3 months ago) started a new job. I am just approaching the end of the probation period and I'm thinking I might change my work hack. My reason being, the 1.9TDi Octavia I have attracts only 15ppm from my employer (I get a car allowance per month). The Octavia gets 50mpg all day long, however, a 2.0litre or greater petrol engine attracts 26ppm, 11ppm more than the Skoda. This is some crazy HMRC recommendation that my employer follows religiously. So, Ive concluded now is my best chance to remove myself from 9 years of DERV ownership and, perhaps for the last time, experience a good petrol engine again. So, requirements:-

• Reliability, reliability, reliability
• High comfort levels on the Motorway (don't mind Manual or Auto, cruise is a must)
• Fuel economy - the more the better, maximise profit from the 26ppm = more cash for the toy

N.B: 300bhp/ton - no Landy's, I have one in the garage for sts and giggles.

I could be wrong, but I thought the higher rate was for cars 2000cc or over, ruling out 99% of cars badged 2.0 ??

Most cars badged as 2.0 are actually something like 1998cc, and therefore fall into the 'under 2,000cc' catergory, which is reimbursed ata lower rate

Indeed. Most are 1998cc or something like that.

Recent Vectras & Zafiras, Peugeot 407s, and Alfa 159/Brera all came with 2.2 litre petrols which would net you the 26ppm. Else the 3 litre BMWs (130i, 330i, etc) all seem to be pretty economical for the power offered.

BMW 320/323 of some kind. I think all 6 pots are over 2000cc and quite frugal for what they offer.

How about a nice 2.4T or T5 V70? Big, comfy, come with cruise. Not too uneconomical on the motorway either.

ETA Or an S60 for that matter.

Not sure on your budget, but these are probably pretty frugal despite their 2.2 litre engine.

Ah. Two critical things! Budget is 4k tops and good job I posted this, of course, I need it to be over 2000cc, so, I need to be very careful! Hmm, looks like either a Volvo turbo or a BMW 6 pot then.

Oh and 300, I can't see the vx being comfortable on long motorway runs!

I can't help but feel you would be better off keeping the diesel.

If you start going over 2.0 litres in a petrol, the fuel costs can bite you. I commuted in a 3.0 AWD X-Type for 5 years.

How much per mile do you get for large engined diesels?

How rough are the motorway's you drive on? Seats that hug you are the most comfy i find. But i might just be lonely

Petrol X-Types are 2.1 FWD, 2.5 AWD or 3.0 AWD.

Dont bother with the 2.1 - wheezy yet thirsty!

Well bugger me i've never head of the 2.1 until just now! My mum had a 2.5 for 5 years and i never new a 2.1 petrol existed. Seems a bit pointless to me. The 2.0D for frugal mondeo men, then 2.5 and 3.0V6 for proper jaaaaaaaaag men. 2.1 seems a bit stupidly small

Mercedes E200 or E250 CGI both are 1.8L engines producing 184 and 204bhp respectively. in the E200, You'll easily achieve 35mpg (real word driving) doing over 70 on Motorway runs however 36/37mpg is achievable if you take it a bit slower.
