Cheap Diesels With Punch

I currently own a Vectra C Cdti 1.9 150BHP SRI, For torque and MPG i cant fault it and with the latest addition of a DTUK box it puts up a good show against the average cars on my commute.

But i have lost interest and think i have gone to the end of the road with this car and would like a change, what diesels are out there sub 8 seconds 0-60? that don't cost the earth? One of the major plus points of the vectra was the 3k price tag of a used top of the range model.

Suggestions?

I've heard the Jaguar S Type 2.7 V6 diesel is a very punchy engine. They're more expensive than 3 grand, but like most used Jags, very good value.

You should be able to get a facelifted e39 530d in good condition for that money. As discussed in another thread, probably one of the finest 2nd hand cars out there at the moment and with 197bhp or so they are still quick.

In fairness to 300 (I actually support a lot of his posts - they are usually thought through in a good/ different way) I think he's right when he says it is worth ringing up specialists for insurance on things like this - you may be pleasantly suprised.

Did you look at the link I posted of the serious suggestion - seems to fit your criteria well.

Ive done alot of searching as ive just renewed but i dont seem to of had any luck real luck, last year a guy drove into me but luckily he admitted liability and we settled it without my insurance company. Apparently insureres think i should be made a higher risk because when i was stopped at a set of lights someone drove into the back of me?!?! Anything of a slightly high insurance group and they want to charge stupid ammounts.

I guess a serious question is, what exactly have you lost interest in with your Vectra? Personally I'm quote fond of diesel engines, but IMO almost all of them are fitted to boring cars, so it's very easy to get bored the entire car, rather than just the engine.

If you simply want more poke, then you could go a little silly an add a nitrous system to your Vectra. The engines handle it quite well (although the gearbox might find it's limits). This would certainly alter its performance, but it'd still be a Vectra.

2.4 Alfa 156's look great, but they are still FWD family cars, so despite their looks would you find one boring after a while?

I think this will be true with most 'normal' cars sadly.


A BMW 330d might be interesting, good chassis, good handling for this type of car. Certainly some fun to be had. But in reality you'll buy a tidier, lower mileage 330i for your money and unless you are doing big miles, the fuel costs might not be drastically different.

So on this train of thought, does it really have to be a diesel?


If it does then an MG ZR diesel is not a bad little hatch if you're on country lanes, but it won't be sub 8 sec to 60mph, not even when remapped.

Why not? Maybe turbo's, super unleaded petrol or DOHC engines should also be discounted then.
