What is the deal with folk who dont adapt to speed limits?!

My new daily commute is (by choice!) made up of:

30% dual carriage-ways
20% A roads
and 50% B roads.

This is excellent as its a lot less boring than plodding along the motorway.


however, there is one thing that really seems to be confusing me- people who don't adapt to the various speed limits along the way..

e.g.

40mph on the B road (NSL), 40mph through the 30mph limit village, then 40mph on the B road (NSL)

carrying 60mph from the single carriage way A road onto the 40mph dual-carriage way it turns into

doing 50mph on A road (NSL), blast up to 80mph for dual-carriage way, then back to 45 on A road (NSL)



For clarity, the B roads appear safely passable at 40mph in an Artic, and I've followed a few LWB transits that happily cope with 50-55mph on the same roads. The B roads are fairly full of blind crests/corners, so safe overtaking opportunities are rare.

The 40mph dual-carriage way has several roundabouts and junctions in a short distance.

I drop to 30mph (or less-if its circa School time) in the villages


How difficult can it be to actually note the variance of speed limits and act accordingly?


Do you lot experience anything like this on a daily basis?

90% of the people i follow around here do 38 on the NSL roads and then carry on doing 38 in the 30 zones ..

Of course. Did you not know that there's a switch in your car that will make it drive at exactly 42mph regardless of speed limit or road condition?

Yes - what you have to bear in mind is that you are one of a minority who actually think about and care about their driving!!

The 40mph everywhere brigade just show a blinkered stubborn approach. The erratic speeders just floor it on roads that are "easy" to drive ie. straight dual carriageways and slow down once any driving skill or even general road sense is required ie. the twistier b-roads.

My commute can either be 16 miles on various A and B roads or 21 miles by D/C and motorway, I tend to favour the shorter route. Anyway, NSL: 40. 50 zone: 40. 30 zone: 40. 20 zone at a school: 40.

Also I genuinely don't think that many people could quote all the relevant speed limits for the different types of road, hence why they are all over the place.

Heh, I knew there was only one way this thread could go since the 40mph brigade is so prevalent.

It's usually those who treat driving as a chore as it usually ends up being one of the least important things they're doing at that moment in time.

I'm currently trying various start times to see if I can minimise interaction with these folks (earlier or later than normal seems to reduce numbers of vehicles on the road)

I'm getting exponentially grumpier with every passing year, and things like this don't help



I reckon a trip up to the North West Highlands is in order to relax!

First part of my journey is about 2 miles of 30mph through 3 villages. You can guarantee at 30 mph there's always somebody right up behind looking to be past.. As you exit the last village nsl applies nice up hill open road so I get up to speed ASAP. Look in the mirror and said car is a tiny dot in the distance.i am driving a diesel 4x4 pick up. Yet they don't want to keep up ! Get halfway through the next village and gues what.there back up your chuff again.. Annoys me

I drive whatever speed I feel comfortable with given the road conditions. There is a 50mph road near me which is very bumpy and has a lot of twists so I go 40mph instead.

no objections to that- but its highly unlikely 5 miles of one road will exhibit EXACTLY the same conditions- therefore people can vary their speed.

I appreciate you are taking prevailing conditions into consideration. That is not the case with the people in my examples

In a 60 zone people driving at 45-50.

Soon as it gets to a 40 zone , they're off doing 60.

It confuses the life out of me !

That's a good point actually. NSL, 50 and 30 limits, which is all my daily commute includes, traffic allowing, they'll do a steady 40mph. Except on the NSL and 50 dual carriageway where they'll do about 60 constantly.
But there's also a 40mph dual carriageway I use occasionally where they'll settle on doing about 50.
Makes no sense to me.

Glad its not just me. See this every day! Sheffield parkway is a prime example, it goes from a 50 to 70 and people normally choose to do 60 the whole way down. Normally overtake me in the 50 stretch then when i go past them in the nsl they take offence. Gets rather tiresome!

To play devil's advocate for a second, a lot of posted speed limits don't make sense to the road they're applied to. There's a lot of 30s through semi-rural areas that could quite comfortably and safely be 40s. Also many stretches of dual carriageway that are 50 but would have very little extra danger with NSL applied. A few people seem to ignore the posted limit and just drive to what they feel (correctly or not) is suitable for the road and so the good citizens sticking religiously to signed limits will appear to "yo-yo" our speed around them.
