My apologies to the Lorry Driver........

who nearly ran me off the road on the M5 today...

I am genuinely sorry that I happened to be present on the same stretch of motorway as you this morning. Had I been made aware in advance that you had booked it for your exclusive use, I would have course have shown due deference and respectfully exited at the nearest available junction.

I am equally sorry that I also happened to be driving alongside you as you started indicating your intention to overtake the lorry driving in front of you. I should anticipate such manoeuvres and maintain a position sitting behind you at 56 mph for the entire duration of my journey.

Equally, I can only express extreme regret for making you aware of my presence (it was wrong of me to assume that I might be in your blind spot). You quite clearly knew I was there as you carried on pulling out regardless (as is your right to do so).

I also am sorry that I didn't brake sharply (the prospect of a serious accident from being hit by the car behind would have been a far less serious outcome compared to your aborted overtake), instead opting to accelerate out of danger.

I quite clearly upset you a fair bit, because after forcing your way in behind me (a few feet from my rear bumper) you exercised your disapproval by sounding your horn and flashing your main beams for a good 20 seconds. I should have avoided driving defensively, and, instead, waited patiently for you to drive into me in your articulated vehicle.

I also have to say sorry for causing you to break your overtaking concentration, because you moved lane position back behind the other lorry soon afterwards.


I've never had a lorry intentionally move into my lane on the motorway before, knowing full well that I was driving alongside in clear view. I can only assume that you are bullying t**t of the highest order, in which case I am genuinely sorry that you have the opportunity to waste oxygen on a daily basis.

I've had one start coming into my lane while I was just coming up to his drive wheels - right in his blind spot I guess. Anchors on, and right over to the very edge of the carriageway, just avoided him hitting me. I don't think I even beeped at him as I was too busy congratulating myself on not being squashed.

I prefer the understated approach. My piss failed to boil as I had been to the toilet shortly befor the incident. I very nearly st myself though - if that counts?

I'm just awaiting for the resident PH lorryists to come out of the shadows with the usual responses. They'll say the car driver is at fault/he was in the lorries blind spot/you should have given way because lorries are more important/people expect food to be in the shops/the lorryist is working to a tight schedule etc etc.

I had similiar just last week. I was doing 70mph + 10% in lane 2 of 2, and just as I was getting level with the trucks cab, he sticks his indicator on. I couldn't do anything and I wasn't breaking to a stop to let some truck driver out. After he pulled out behind me (which was clear), I got full beams. Knob jockey.

If I was in charge Trucks would only be allowed in anything other than lane one for a quater of a mile either side of a junction. One truck doing 56.6 mph over taking another doing 56.4mph for four minutes isn't very useful to the country, in the same time 100 cars could have got past.

I agree.

However, some truck drivers seem to think the UK economy will grind to a halt and the shelves will be bare if they can't overtake whenever they want, regardless whether that means forcing everyone else out of the way.

Obviously it's only truck drivers that have deadlines to meet. People in cars don't have appointments and schedules to work to....

Nope, 3 lane, and I would have moved over had the 3rd lane not been full of traffic and had it been safe to do so.

This is only my second 'incident' with a Lorry Driver in over 20 years of driving. I needed to get it off my chest because he knew I was alongside and yet he moved over regardless. I've seen this quite a few times on the motorway recently - albeit not been involved directly.

I'm not going to be an arse and say you should have anticipated it, I've been caught a few times (certainly a lot more than twice, and at least a couple where I've no idea how a collision was avoided) but if I see a bunch of lorries in convoy I move to lane 3 if I can and if I can't then I wait until I can get clearly past and then pass each one in a series of squirts.
