Why have a website, and an e-mail address, and a button saying 'contact us' about the car, if you are promptly going to ignore the e-mail i send to you?

I don't want to ring you because i work shifts and cant.

Second to this, are the dealers/garages who dont even bother to answer any questions I put in the e-mail, or just respond with very vague and uninterested e-mails.

If you cant get these basics right, im not going to be trusting you with selling me a car im afraid.

After another 3 enquires last night, i get only one e-mail back. Despite the fact i asked for details over e-mail (service history, owners etc) i get a message saying "please call me on 0*** to discuss".

If you are interested call them.

If you aren't don't.

You can't have a proper conversation over mail anyway.

Based on the replies to this thread it seems no one wants to respond to you hehe

That's fair and I tend to do the same with a phone call to make final arrangements when all else seems well.

I've never seen a salesman so busy they can't send an email so its just idleness.

OP already explained it's difficult to call. Oh, and regarding not being able to have a proper conversation via email, the 1990s called, they'd like to be introduced. wink

Hardly surprising with that attitude.

Don't blame them, blame the people who ask for information on an e-mail, get a response that takes time and effort to compile, then reply with one of the following:

"What's the lowest price you'll take?"
"How much for cash?"
"I'll give you £XXXX" (when the car is up at 40% more)

Even in this day and age serious car buyers (generally) use the phone or talk in person - fact.

I don't think e-mails should totally be ignored (as is often the case) but I completely don't blame the dealer who has a sentence asking to call them ready to copy and paste as a reply.

We will always respond to an email whatever it is about.

Having said this, I will always take a phone enquiry more seriously. So many people can just send an e-mail and so many do with no real intention of buying a car. I suspect that a lot of e-mails I reply to are to people who aren't yet old enough to hold a driving licence.

To put it the other way round, would you take me more seriously if I phoned you to offer you a car or if I sent you an email to do the same?

I emailed a dealer (via ebay) about px on a bike they had for sale in a classified listing.

They phoned me within about 10 minutes then did some research on a price that they could offer me.

Called me back again within an hour.

So they are not all bad!

Sure, if you offer people an email address with which to communicate with ou then you should answer them when they use it. Mind you, my opinion is that email is most likely the wort way of communicating when dealing with serious matters. So, if the enquiry is just after some facts and not for purposes of negotiation then it's bad service not to respond properly. Otherwise, wouldn't use it for negotiation because I wouldn't xpect to be taken seriously.

If you meantion in the email correspondence that you work shifts but have a real interest in Product X providing they can give you details that you feel are important but stopping you from progressing at present the salesperson may be more accommodating.

Alternatively, give them a ring on your break if you are that serious about it.

They probably think your next email will ask if you accept Western Union and can you ship it to Lagos.

If you want the car ten mins on the phone at lunch will not hurt and you can apply a bit of enthusiasm to show your interest! I know it's annoying but think how many people use email to ask quick questions about a car they probably won't buy? I imagine its a fair few! I only ring someone when I know I am ready to go buy what ever it is they are selling and sellers know this too.

There's a lot of small companies that have decided to get onto the internet bandwagon before they are ready.

An idea is to email explaining you work shifts but give them a time to call you when you are free - the salesman I bought my last car from was happy to call me in the evenings after showroom hours - he got the sale as I appreciated he was going above & beyond what he had to do.

I agree with the OP on this.

I been looking to buy for a couple of weeks now.

Any car that seems to match my needs and budget gets an email asking for MOT number to do MOT history check and Number Plate if not shown in Advert so I can do Tax check and HPI.

I explain that I have rubbish phone signal so miss most calls so will they please email and that I am a serious buyer with cash ready to buy within the week if the car checks out ok.

Yet most either email back just saying "come and see it, you will want to buy it" without any detail or questions answered or ignore the email.

Surely if I want to do HPI & MOT history check and offering to buy within the week I am worth 2 mins to email.

I rang a van dealer 2 weeks ago to ask about a new van, spoke with "Ken" in sales, price agreed, happy with deal, can you email over finance quotes.

No problem he says, 2 weeks later, nothing, so i ring him, to be told he is on the phone, and will call me with 15 mins.

24 hrs later nothing, so this morning I rang dealer, spoke with "Paul" in sales, told him Ken does not seem to want to do business, does he, oh yes please, emailed finance quote within 10 mins, I call him back and have just paid deposit.

From one extreme to another at this dealership it seems, its all down to who you get on the phone.

I would not send that information in repsonse to an e-mail. If you called and said you lived miles away, asked the right sort of questions, then maybe....but until you'd asked more general questions, you'd not get that as I'm pretty certain you'd be able to get some very useful information on the car, particularly if your intentions were less than genuine.
