I like the power delivery that a larger engine car gives, I am not talking outright speed but a easy drive. thing is, I am also finding the size of my cayenne a bit of a pain to live with.
So I started to look for smaller cars that still have that stately wofty feel.

Golf R32, sounded good

To me it has all the power of the golf, the same MPG but a whopping 33% cheaper, Does the price just reflect tha fact that a Jaguar is not in fashion with the youth of the day.

Firstly, most people look at the engine capacity of the Jag and are scared off, regardless of mpg. They assume it will do about 10 to the gallon.

In addition to this, the servicing will cost more on the Jag, and probably the parts too. Plus there are VW dealers everywhere.

R32 has a very strong following, with lots of people graduating from lesser hot hatches. These people probably wouldn't look at a Jag.

Jags saloons of that era are seriously good value.

If I didn't still need an estate one of them would be a good alternative to my E Class.

Golf's are overpriced for what they are, you just have to rely on greater fool theory come resale time. I have one, and a Jag.

I've seen R32s for sale for around £10k. To me, it's the better choice with its albeit Haldex 4WD. A friend recently sold his Mustang V8 and bought one to downsize and loves it.

Personally, it depends what you want. I'm no graet fan of barges and a hatch is so much easier to see out of place and park that it would be a no brainer for me unless I needed a big boot. I think the Jag also has an (unreliable) electronic handbrake which would stop me considering it.

S type isn't that much smaller than the Porsche and is / feels very small inside.

If you are also considering the Golf surely the (reliable) middle ground would be a 330 BMW ?

R32 has a bit of a cult following, i loved mine, only car i have owned that was still making me smile the day i sold it 5 years after getting it

fantastic noise and so easy to drive sideways, hysterical fun

cheap to run apart from the mpg and road tax

Good cars but I just can't stand the look of them.

In fact if you're running a Cayenne perhaps an M3 / M5 or if you want more waft a Lexus GS 4.3 V8 or one of the many Merc equivalents.
