Car Covers ?

I bought a cheapy car cover for my 944 last year, hadnt used it until Wednesday this week as am using it less over the winter and want to keep the worst of the weather off it and it lives under a large Beech Tree which is about to drop all its leaves, the tree also houses several winged creatures whose mission in life is to cover my car in Guano with the sticking power of Dried on Weetabix mixed with concrete.

Anyway, put the cover on and all was well, fitted quite well. Went to the car today as I had decided to nip it in for an MOT this morning and took the cover off, fair enough it has been raining pretty heavily but the car was drenched underneath the cover, I was thinking some may have got through but it didnt seem to have made any difference, are these simply for keeping the crap off ?

What do I need to keep the car dry under its cover, was thinkign of lashing some moisture dispersant on it, the stuff that goes on the fabric hood does a wonderful job on the hood of displacing moisture, or do I need to be less of a cheapskate and buy a decent cover ?

Never had much joy with cheapo covers, they all seem to get damp underneath and cause more problems than they prevent.

I once bought an Austin 10 that had been stored outside for a long long time. Expecting the worst, I removed two heavy tarps and it hadn't suffered at all. I can only think that condensation formed between the two covers, rather than between the cover and the car's bodywork, saving the car from going crusty.

Other than using a small cover on the MX5s SWMBO used to own (covering just the soft top), I've not bothered with covers again.
