Removing airbag

Looking at some cars in the classifieds, and have seen a number where the factory airbag steering wheel has been swapped for a Momo or similar non-airbag wheel.

Is this legal? Presumably the car needs to me recoded to think it hasn't got airbags?

'Recoded'? A resistor is usually all that is required.

Latest MOT regulations from 2012,

Supplementary restraints.

The vehicle will fail the test if any airbag fitted as original equipment is obviously missing or defective.

A seatbelt pre-tensioner fitted as original equipment but missing or that has obviously deployed will be a reason for failure.

The vehicle will also fail if a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp indicates a system malfunction.

Ive MOTd a car recently on which the OEM airbag wheel was replaced with a Momo. Theres more to it than cutting and pasting.

I would be interested in this as I understand the car should not now pass an MOT test

Please note that Annex B items are yet still to come into operation for the MOT test and can only be advised at present.

No illuminated airbag lamp and no advisory. Im already familiar with the testers manual.

Next year I will be MOTing a car which has fixed seats as well. These too will pass without an advisory.
