Honda HRV What are they like ?

OK don't shoot me down for this, but they are very cheap !

Aside from the controversial looks, what are they like...and how would it fare as a winter hack. My immediate thoughts are tyres might be the let down in slippery conditions ?

I had one as a company car in 2001, and despite being both woefully slow and woefully thirsty, I quite liked it - it was quirky and different, and it handled surprisingly well for something so tall. The standard version has just 105bhp, the VTEC has 125. Specs are the same for both.

The 4WD system is not permanent or manually selectable, and the rear wheels only kick in when the front ones lose traction. Versions badged 'Joy Machine' are 2WD only. It was facelifted for the 2002 model year.

It's also worth noting that they're only four-seaters - even the five-door that I had only had two seats in the back. If you can live with that, they're not a bad car at all. IIRC they scored very highly in a reliability survey a couple of years ago.

What tyres has it got on?

Well, I have no idea, but would I be correct in thinking that most HR-V's will be fitted with standard summer car tyres. In recent years my winter hack(s) have had to do some country lane rally driving to avoid otherwise blocked roads.

I know someone posted about picking one up recently on the readers cars forum, He seemed to be quite happy with it for a winter hack. Might be worth trawling back a few pages and having a read of his thread.

Thanks for the link, so they actually look ok. Last years winter hack (still got it) Range Rover LSE on LPG (even on gas MPG into single figures is a non starter, as is the heater, the fact I need to disconnect the battery each time I leave it overnight, and my Mrs won't drive it. Previously Pajero, great truck but so slow.

I have a 20 mile country road/motorway followed by 9 miles into central London commute, returning home in the early hours .... this sounds like it might work for a few months
