Because none of Jags rivals offer similar engine options.

What's wrong with that? 7.5 to sixty sounds pretty good for a car of that size.

It wouldn't be my engine of choice but in markets where engines above 2.0 are taxed to death as I believe they are in Italy, it should sell well.

But it doesn't have the correct number of cylinders! Needs at least 6 in my opinion.

I don't see the problem. It's a luxury barge not a muscle car, and quite a lightweight one at that. Nought to 60 in 7.5 seconds sounds like plenty.

Don't get me wrong, I like V8 excess as much as the next man, but I think it's a bit irrelevant in something like that. You can still get a 5-litre supercharged variant if that's what you want.

This engine in the Evoque provides quite ample performance. Should think this XJ will go very nicely indeed.

I agree the performance figures look good, but not having a large greater than or equal to 6 cylinder engine (I won't use the term "multicylinder") just doesn't seem very Jaguar-y. And somehow very wrong.

Yep, just take every iconic car you can think of with more than 4 cylinders, then brace yourself for the news some time in the next couple of years. Won't be quite such a shock then

Gallardo 5-cyl anyone?

Ok it's a four pot, but...

Effectively, the 2.0-litre replaces the old 3.0-litre V6, and it delivers 237bhp with 340Nm of torque at 2,000rpm, which ensures sprightly performance – 0-62mph takes 7.5 seconds.

...not bad. Hopefully the balancer shafts will help with refinement.

I welcome this, it is jaguar keeping up with the times and probable means they have their eye on 'sporting' engines in the same or other models. Companies always have a low emmision variant to justify the large, performance orientated specs

Well, if you are anything like me, who values the aural experience of a car, then the way things are going are very sad. Yes, the performance stats from BMW, Jaguar etc are very very good, but one word always comes into my head. Disappointment. I know that if I had one of these, yes, the interior is very nice and it's undeniably luxurious and well appointed, I would be forever disappointed that it didn't come with a nice sound. I won't say soundtrack or noise, because I know cars like these are well insulated. Likewise if I bought an F30 328i, I would be disappointed that it didn't have a lovely 6 cylinder sound as the 328i of yore.

What would be really clever is to try and engineer a 6 cylinder engine with 4 cylinder consumption and emissions. That's the challenge, that's what manufacturers should aspire to, not putting a turbocharger on a 4 cylinder because it seems the "easy" way to meet ever more stringent emissions targets. To me, it smacks of giving up.

Let's face it though, a lot of these are used as posh taxis in London where they don't need a big engine, just the ability to waft between Knightsbridge and Heathrow without waking up the passengers. Sensible move from Jaguar IMO.

You can always 'synthesise' a V12 noise in there wink
