Ok, I meant to post about this before but forgot. However, tonight it bloody happened again - and this is the third time this year now, so a rant is in order.

The airline at my local Sainsburys is in a little alcove. The alcove can be driven straight into, forwards, so you end up with the air and water machine about a foot in front of the centre of the front of the car. The airline can then be pulled nicely down either side of the car, and the water hose straight under the bonnet for washer fluid etc. Perfect.

To the left of you when you park there, is enough room for another car to pull in and park.

I am careful about my car, so when I pull the airline down the side to the rear wheels, I walk backwards to get enough slack, and push the line down so that it runs under the edges of the front bumper, against the front wheel. This way, I don't drag a grubby hose along the front wing and bodywork of my car. With me so far?

So, the routine is to use the airline to do the tyres, and then use the water line to top up the washer bottle.

Maybe I've just been unlucky, but as I say, for the third flipping time tonight, some inconsiderate muppet has pulled up next to me whilst I'm at 'stage two' doing the washer bottle, and proceeded to walk right behind me, pull the airline out, and start to walk off down the side of their car, dragging the flipping thing across the front corner of my front wing furious

It's bloody obvious I am leaving shortly - and despite thinking it's ok to drag a hose across my car, they then struggle like buggery to contort and drag the hose round all the corners, and fight against the spring-rewind which is getting to the end of it's travel.

Why they can't just flipping wait a few minutes, and then be able to park in the perfect spot I've just vacated, I have no idea.

And so, on each occasion, I've politely said "look, can you not drag that hose along my car - I will be finished in literally 30 seconds and then you can park here" to be met with a blank, slack-jawed stare - like I've just said "look, do you mind awfully if I go to your house, rape your wife, kill your children and then burn the place down?"

People eh. Amazing.

Sorry 2/10, not one single sweary word.......

Fair point though, if I were you I'd buy myself a nice pump and a watering can.

Get a little 12V compressor and do them at home. I also have a tap at home. Using this tap, I can fill a kettle with water and top up my washers.

It means one less contact point with the 'others'/

Ray's posts are - nine times out of ten - very well mannered, and IMO his rant is justified at the bloody inconsiderate cocksockets mentioned.

To stop this, I usually pretend to fiddle for ages at one wheel until the air runs out and then drive off so that they don't get to use any air that I've paid for and don't damage my car. Yes I'm tight. Yes I'm anal. Not both together though...

Winters on it's way, that washer fluid will be freezing soon if you don't add some good quality soapy stuff.

I think your tyres might be leaking. wink

Fill 'em up with nitrogen, it can't get out so easily. On both my cars, the pressures never change from one year to the next.

as the tyre spins faster, the centrifugal force pins the nitrogen to the outer part of the tyre, meaning it can't escape via the rim or the valve. This explains it a bit better: link

I'm trying to work out if you seriously believe that or there's a joke I'm missing.

You do realise 'air' is 80% nitrogen and your 100% nitrogen is diluted by the fact the gas bottle will have some air in it and your tyres will too even when their flat. I'd love to know how much money the garage relieved your wallet of for the privilege of an extra 5% nitrogen.

It's free at Costco.

The reason it's used is the tyres do hold their pressures better. I think the nitrogen molecules prefer the dark or something. wink

My understanding of using nitrogen in tyres, and ive done enough, is that you use an approprately equipped machine to evacuate the air, then refill with nitrogen, which is more temperature stable, therefore doesn't get the 2-5 psi pressure rise cold-to-hot. Nitrogen certainly does leak straight through sealed rubber, however slowly, that's why hydropneumatic Citroens go bouncy!
