Converting from an Auto licence to a full license?

My wife passed her test in the US many years ago and now has an auto license only in the UK. I've been limited to cars that are auto that we can share for some time now and want her to pass with a manual license.

I've bought a Clio trophy which would be ideal to pass in. Only problem is she never passed a theory and he has a LOT of bad habits as a result of driving in London for years.

What's would be the easiest way for her to covert?

Without sounding obvious- book some lessons with a driving school .

Lessons from a good driving school, as mentioned. It shouldn't be hard for her to get her manual driving to the level where she can pass the test.

I wasn't sure if the theory test is now required for all new tests. I'll phone the DVLA on Monday.

Can she drive my car with learner plates legally or would it need to be a school car? If its a lot of hastle there is less likelihood of her bothering with the commitment. We do have other things going on with a young family etc.

I am not a police officer.

I can't see any reason why she couldn't drive your car with L plates, as long as she is accompanied by someone who holds a full licence of course.

We must be one of the last places on earth to worry about auto and manual cars !

There are so many different types of transmission these days, I can't understand why we still bother , they are all so different to drive !

To be fair it's a recent restriction (along with the removal of towing , 7.5t and below on a standard car license).

If you are talking about the theory test, yup, if you add a bike licence, you get to mix with the teens, and get stared at when you waltz out in ten minutes with 100%.

If the auto/manual thing, it was there in 1987, so not that recent.

There were auto and manual licences when I turned seventeen, all the way back in 1978.

The 7.5 ton to 3.5 ton change, was I believe , in October 1997, I only remember this as they got me on my 3 year licence renewal (diabetic) in Feb 2000.
