BMW - VANOS issues?

I've just bought a 520i 24v for not very much. It sounds a bit diesely at idle and occasionally makes a metallic ticking. I've changed the oil and filter and this has been beneficial. It runs perfectly and produces its full compliment of power. I've thought about the bottom end being at fault but that tends to make a full on "engine's gonna die" type noise and is audible when firing up. Mine is quiet when starting but the noise appears a bit later. It is inaudible in the cabin and can only be heard close to the car if one knows what to look for. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine.
Now it has the later type M50 straight six with single VANOS. This appears to work; there should be a jump in torque at 4,000 revs - which is present. In addition the noise comes back at the VANOS crossover point. I should have said that it disappears between 1 and 3,000 revs. I have concerns that it could be coming from the fan or water pump area. I really hope it isn't the bottom end. But surely something that serious would have other symptoms. Any ideas?
