Non-transferable registration mark

Just had a new V5 through the door and seen that under the special notes (section 3), it says that the registration mark is non-transferable.

Why would this be? The car is a UK car from 2003 on an 03 reg. New at first reg. The reg isn't special at all. Car is not on the V-Car. Never been exported/imported. I can't think of any reason as to why this may be? Does anyone on PH have any ideas?

Possibly had a private reg on it before you bought it, the reg number on it now is the one DVLA will have assigned to the car on change over.

These are generally non transferable.

All of my cars have had non-transferable after taking private plates off...

It only means you cannot put that plate onto another car.

You can bin that one and put another plate onto that car if you wish.

Fair enough - it did have a personalised plate on it before my ownership (and the chap before mine's). Just surprised that these are non-transferable?

It's done for this reason,

• Old car starts out with registration JON 777
• Owner swaps plate for one (PDZ 142) he's bought for £350 from DVLA auction
• Owner sells JON 777 plate off retention for £2,000
• Owner applies to put PDZ 142 onto retention and DVLA have to issue a new plate, say BOB 398
• Owner then goes round the loop again, selling BOB 398 for £1,500 when DVLA would prefer to have had that cash themselves.

Thus DVLA make the newly issued plate non-tranferable.

My old VX220 came with a non-transferable personalised reg, it was AT54VXT so not something to die for, going through the history the 3rd owner had put the plate on the car and then sold it with the plate, the 4th owner put another personalised plate on top of that, and the old EU04XXX plate it came with got re-assigned/lost/sold etc and so it ended up keeping AT54VXT.

Not true in my experience.

I've bought 2 cars on their original, never changed, plates and put my plate on. Both have ended up non transferable when the original went back on.

My current car was on its original plate when I bought it, which was also non transferable due to previous private plates.

Not true in my experience either.

My 944 has had 3 owners and six number plates. Each owner has purchased the car and had their own personal plate put on it once purchased, and had a 'normal' (age-related) plate put back on the car before selling it. Each 'normal' plate has been different. (And I'm not sure whether the plate currently on it - an age-related one - is non-transferable or not.)

I had this once and questioned the DVLA. It was a simple mistake (they happen!!)
