I am looking to sell my car, it is mot'd and taxed until nxt year but as its not bein used insurance has expired. Would I need to get the car insured before a dealer would accept it or I sold it on? Do they check if it is insured? Just dont want to have to take out a brand new policy for a car im selling

Thanks smile

A dealer won't give a stuff about the car being insured. On a separate topic, if your car is taxed, it must be insured. That's the law, and you are risking a fine by keeping it taxed but not insured. You can make a SORN declaration to avoid that problem.

If not insured, how will your car be tested or driven to a dealership?

How are you going to get it to a dealer if it's uninsured?

There's no requirement for a vehicle you are selling (either privately or to the trade) to be covered by a valid policy of insurance.

If you were selling to the trade though, you'd have to get a dealer to come and collect it, or find someone with a suitable DOC policy to drive it there for you.

Anyway, if the vehicle is not currently insured, it's presumably SORN'd at the moment ?

Due to circumstances I've had my car uninsured for about a month and half and it is taxed. The other car was intermittantly insured for 2weeks on then 4 off, then 1 week on then 2 off... Nobody said a thing.

The car doesn't need to be insured, see if the garage will send an employee to collect your car on their insurance policy?

As with any rule, you might get caught breaking it, you might not.

The OP started by saying that the car is taxed, but then said it is on a SORN. In the latter case, there is no risk of a penalty related to insurance.

Quite - that debate again.

In short, getting the dealer to collect would seem to be the simplest solution and one which would avoid the chance of prosecution for use of an unlicensed vehicle on a road, should the OP get one of his suitably insured mates to drive the vehicle (as is) to a garage.

However, if planning on driving the car under the 'Drive other cars' entitlement on insurance policies, the majority of these state that the car in question MUST have it's own insurance policy, for this clause to 'piggyback' off. In the OP's case, it doesn't therefore they wouldn't be able to do it.

They really did make things very difficult when they introduced the 'insured or sorned' law.

'The majority' is open for some debate - neither of my policies require it, for instance.

Regardless, even if it was 'the majority' of DOC providing policies, it is not all, hence use of the words 'suitable DOC insurance' in previous posts..

Cookie1982 - do you have a dealer who has agreed to buy your car ?
