Hi

So at the weekend, the Girlfriend and I decided to syphon some fuel from her old car. She just filled up, before crashing it... rolleyes

So, we got our hose, containers etc. and all is looking good.

In goes the hose, its decided I should be the one to suck the fuel out. Seconds later I have a mouthful of fuel and coughing/throwing up ensued. No sodding petrol at this stage mad

Im rolling around, coughing, spluttering and generally feeling like I;ve just swallowed a load of petrol....Seeing this, and then ignoring it she gives it a go and swallows half a pint of fuel in the process.

So there we are, crawling about the floor drowning ourselves with water in an attempt to flush out the petrol....by which time the local kids had started to gather to watch this spectacle.

The fuel is still in the old car... we gave up, my burps still taste of petrol, and I am worried to fart around a naked flame. Both of us were almost dead. I think we managed to syphone out more into ourselves then we did the containers.

I'm not sure if syphoning fuel works like it does in the films...

Cool story Bro...but thought it might provide a laugh.

You should be able to find the fuel pump under the back seats, disconnect the hose that leads to the front and turn on the ignition/crank the engine (if it will).

That's what I did to a car that lunched the engine with a fuel tank of fuel in it.

It's worked fine for me in the past. I think the problem may have been that you both decided to swallow....

On another note, are you sure you had the container on the floor rather than elevated above your fuel tank?

Yep, I get the "physics" of it, Which is why I was sure it was going to work.
Sadly, the swallow option was kinda unavoidable. rolleyesbiggrin

Maybe try a bit of practice syphoning water out of a bath until you get the technique right.

This must be the easiest thing in the world to do...or to get wrong. A mate tried it a few years ago and had similar results to you. I managed to do it a month or two ago and got a slight burn on my lip which faded after about half an hour.

These work well: http://www.roachpumps.co.uk/4_syphon_pumps.htm

If the car is being scrapped, why not just put a screwdriver through the bottom of the fuel tank?

I didnt realise, that I had cut my lip earlier in the day. Petrol in a cut... burns like a bh!

Good to know that the missus can suck stuff through a drainpipe and isnt put off by dodgy tasting liquids though.

She did comment saying she would be better... she was! She managed to get more fuel out than I did.

So cheap I pick up fag ends off the floor in the hope I can get a drag at least.
70 quid is a lot of money to us peasants.

Surely a cutting torch would be quicker?
