Ok so asking this on PH is likely to illicit a no response I assume, but anyone gone back to petrol and regretted it?

I'm thinking of making my next daily a petrol with circa 40mpg v's the current diesels 50mpg (not a huge cost differential). Taking into consideration that this is the daily driver only, but I would like to have fun too, any thoughts?

I actually quite like the mid range punch (236 lb/ft) and the shove in the back, but of course the noise could be slightly more pleasant, but overall I've not objected to my first diesel at all.

Cheers

No... But then again it was a 306 non turbo that was on its last legs I got for nothing.... Upgraded for a 535i.... Couldn't stand the lack of noise or power.

Yup. I started to do too many miles, and while the car would be economical at 60, if I start to push on it was decidedly less so. Now gone back to diesel, although I'm less than happy with that particularly car at the moment...

Nope. Went from S-Type Jaguar diesel to a Volvo V70 T5. The Jag never got anything even remotely like the fuel economy it needed to justify the complexity of the engine, it desperately needed more power and there was no fun to be had from ragging it. A switch to a V8 S-Type would have been even better. No more diesels for me, ever.

Went from a 320d to a 130i and I love it.
And to be honest the diesel would give me 500 miles from a rough £99 tank where the 130i has a smaller tank so need to refuel twice a week and get 640 (320 per tank) for roughly the same money.

Cheers fellas

Should've added one serious bonus in my eyes is only having to fill up every 500-550 miles, queuing at petrol stations isn't one of my favourite jobs!

I reckon the petrol equivalent will be 350-400 miles.

Warning, dull family car content...

Went from a 2.2 diesel Fiat Ulysse to a 4.0 petrol Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep is so much smoother and makes a much nicer sound. Boy, does it like a drink though.

You don't have to miss the shove. My petrol has more torque than that and it's available from 1600rpm to 4000rpm. It's perfectly economical in the TT, staggeringly so when I've used cruise at 60 and has plenty of power for what it's in. I understand the EA888 engines are de-tuned for other uses like the A4 for instance but the peak torque remains. I guess this would add to economy.

I went from a remapped Mk4 Golf PD130 (~170 bhp) to an Audi S2 Avant (~230 bhp). MPG went from averaging 40 to 19! No regrets at all. I'm now in an e46 330ci.

Went the other way in with the wife's cars. 1.4 Petrol Lupo (16v) to Mk4 Golf PD130 to Galaxy 1.9 tdi. Again no regrets. The derv lump suits the Galaxy perfectly and I've still got my own car for fun.

Interesting, it's a MK6 Golf GTI I'm thinking of getting, obviously with an EA888 engine, what else are they in then? (Everything VAG I assume!!)

I assume the A5 2.0T is one also and that gets 42mpg I think.

Yeah a lot of Vag stuff but the 2.0 was in the TT first, I think early 2011. I've just looked at the MK6 Golf and it seems to have lower torque, I'm not sure why it's lower when it produces the same power. Either way, it's a cracker of an engine and I find mine very economical. Parkers says the TT weighs about 1250kg which may be rubbish but would go some to explain why it's fairly economical.

It seems that possibly the EA888 came out in the MK6 GTI first then they've improved ever since - as you mention it seems to be 207bhp/210ps but 207 lb/ft - not massively down on mine.

I think it weighs circa 75k more than the TT so might explain a little of the economy increase, plus improvements by VAG of course as the GTI came out in '09.

No.

Gone from Civic 2.2 to Civic Type R. 49 mpg to 33 mpg and will cost £5-600 a year.

Well worth it to not be driving a diesel. No more waiting for clutch/dmf/injectors/pump to fail.

I think you need to drive a decent one (but I appreciate your point), the torque is awesome, BUT as a petrolhead I didn't move to the devils fuel easily!

As I say though it's only a daily, if it was my only driver I very much doubt I'd have a diesel.

I've always said the same thing, "I'll never buy/drive/get in a Diesel" but having spent the last few weeks car sharing with a guy from work in his Derv Mondeo I can now see the appeal. The midrange shove is very addictive, even from the passenger seat.

But, would I buy one? probably not as I don't do the miles to justify the switch.

Ah, that explains it. I thought it was new for the TT. On a clear run I can easily get 40mpg worked out brim to brim. The Mrs. uses the car mostly and commutes about 35% 60mph NSL and 65% urban a and b roads and tends to get about 33MPG worked out in the same way. I can't see the golf being less.

Interesting, I'm probably about to do this, and regret it. The project I was on required lots of miles, so I sold the Saab and bought a Bora TDI, then moved to a different project 5 minutes from home. Now I'm moving 20 minutes away and thinking of chucking in the diesel for something more exciting (which doesn't narrow down the list much).
