Browsing the classifieds and being a little bored/uninspired by my Cooper S I've started looking at Focus STs.
Budget wise I'm looking at around the 8k mark and there seem to be quite a few low (40k) mileage cars in this range. I must admit the idea of the big(ish) turbo engine is tempting, however on my commute to work at the moment in the mini I am struggling to get 30mpg (my journey is 8 miles each way) and I accept that I'm probably going to get much worse than that in the Focus. I've had a quick check and can't see any major known issues with STs, but would be interested if anyone has any horror stories that would put me off.
We currently have a plain 1.8 Focus which handles surprisingly well (nice and predictable unlike the understeery mini) so I would assume that the ST is going to be a fair bit better than this handling wise.
So can anyone suggest alternatives ? I don't have a particularly interesting car history, I tend to keep my cars for 5 years+, the mini is the first car that I have considered getting rid of 'early'. I need something reliable as I don't have many options for getting to/from work so I don't want something that will need a lot of looking after.
Cars I've also looked at:
Megane RS (really don't like the looks of these)
Seat Cupra (used to own a Mk1 Leon Cupra R)
M3 (high mileage would be my only option, hence not really a serious choice)
Would love an Elise but I don't think the budget could stretch to one of these and I'm also a little wary about how much it would cost to keep on the road.
