DVLA - SORN - Export - Insurance
Discussion
Aaarrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh.
1) I have a car in Dublin for 6 months. My UK insurer will not cover me for more than 3 months.
2) I insure the car in Ireland with a Dublin insurance company.
3) I write to the DVLA as car is still taxed and MOT'd.
4) I SORN the vehicle as it is off the UK roads.
Apparently you cannot SORN a vehicle abroad. You cannot insure a vehicle abroad. What is the point in having a temporary export system?
"Taking your vehicle abroad for less than 12 months (temporary export)
If a UK registered vehicle is taken abroad temporarily, it remains subject to UK law. This means that you as the keeper, must by law make sure that the vehicle stays taxed while it’s overseas. Providing the vehicle has a current MOT certificate and insurance, you’ll be able to tax the vehicle.
You can tax or SORN online or by telephone, but please note that SORN can’t be made while the vehicle is abroad."
Does anyone know any section of the DVLA that takes a common sense approach to matters? It looks like I will have to insure the car twice now (once in the UK and once in Ireland).
FFS. Does anyone know an insurer in the UK who will cover in Ireland?
