Trying to sell numberplates

I don't have hard figures to back this up but my instinct tells me that, of all the numbers sold by DVLA as "cherished", only a tiny percentage have any actual value to a second buyer.
Surely the plates that have a market value are the old/dateless ones especially those with fewer characters, and the "clever" ones that actually spell something without making the viewer squint and employ their imagination.

In fairness, it's a 7 not a Z and 17 is not a great number and it requires mis-spacing to butcher it slightly and alternatively finding someone with all 3 initials beginning with E is a remote possibility.
Overall, I can see why it's been hard to sell but it perhaps underlines why number plates are a lousy investment. You'd be better sticking it on your car and leaving it there, even when you sell it, at least it will add a selling point.

List it on EBay for no reserve.
If it doesn't sell, just don't bother renewing it and let it lapse.
I doubt its got much value anyway and I am sure you have had £500 worth of use out of it.
I am sure if Dizzee Rascal wanted a plate like that he could afford D12 EEE or R45 CAL or something better.

Easy - leave it on the car when you sell it. Sounds like you have tried the sensible routes to market and the market has shown you its value. Just paid deposit on a new car which has a private plate on it, the previous owners initials. Plate doesn't mean anything to me, but think I will contact the previous owner to see if she wants to buy it off me (apparently she traded it in and didn't want the hassle of transferring before she traded the car in). Does anyone know what I would need to do to sell her the reg and revert the car to its original plate?

Apply to put the plate on retention and then the old plate will be re-allocated to the car but note you will ahve the hassle of having to submit your MOT (used to, not sure in this digital age)and tax disc to be altered and have plates made up.
