The big question, am I old enough for a Jag yet at 33??????

Heres the crack, I'm in the market for a motorway cruiser to do my 100 mile a day commute up and down the M11. I have a £3k budget an need something that will sit on the M11 at 65mph (traffic doesn't permit any faster) return something around the 40-45mpg range and be nice and comfy to drive and that where a 2Lt X-Type diesel seems to fit the bill.
I'm currently driving a 2.5tdi a6 avant (2002) and it surplus to requirements now the missus has just got an xc90 so I have no need for the big estate. I've always had a soft spot for the baby Jag and with second hand models around this price now its become an option. I just fancy something a little different from a mondeo, vectra or a 3 series zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Whats the thoughts here, is it a safe option or should I stir clear????

Often pondered the same question.
I've been looking at Jag's and C-Classes but the bread knife would refuse to drive one as they are 'old man cars'

Above all its your choice, remember that! I only have a colleague and father in laws experience to go by and It's not good. Both had X type diesels on a 55 plate. Both fraught with electrical problems and water entering places it shouldnt. Both had shot in less than 12 months of ownership, to unreliable.

2.0 X-type will easily mash that MPG figure at that speed.

I have a 3.0 and find it a very pleasant place to be. The dash board shaped like a spitfire wing, the needle cones like propeller cones, electric leather seats, cruise etc.

Very calming place to sit being slightly old world

General parts cost relative peanuts too! (had a 5-series before)

I'm 23 and just placed a deposit on my first Jag. As said above, if you like it and want it, then why does it matter what other people think, they are just jealous.

If you want one, and can afford it, get it- sod what anyone else thinks and do it!

I purchased my first Jag at 23, so being 10 year older than me you have nothing to worry about.
I had a 2.0d X-Type Estate with all the toys, and at 65mph it would easily do over 50mpg, at 75-80 leptons it did 46mpg.
Despite you not needing an estate I would still go for one as they are much more desirable than the saloons and IMO nicer to looks at.

Bought a 55 plate 2.0D Estate when I was 31. A gentle motorway run would average around 52mpg.

Go for a decent spec (SE, Sport premium or sovereign) and you'll get leather, 12 way electricaly adjutable heated seats, sat nav, cruise control and heated windscreen.

In my opinion the only thing that lets the car down is the lack of refinement from the diesel engine.

I was 20 when I got my Jag - a sebring red series 3 3.4.

It sounded like Barry White, and felt like going for a drink with Oliver Reed and finding that he'd lost his wallet.

If I were you, I'd get a 2001/2002 3.0 SE for about 1500-2000 and stick a LPG kit on it for another grand. They'll have 60-80K miles on them for that sort of money.

In terms of the 2.0D - I'd run away and fast. Just the thought of injector troubles and dual mass fly wheels makes me shudder - the amount of mondeos and transits with that TDCI engine that throw up massive bills is unreal.

'Jags are for old men' is for those who are small of mind and think the poverty spec A3 is the way to go.

Strange my son is 23 and seriously considering a S type 3.0. The quotes he's got back from insurance seem to be really reasonable for the type of car and he really does no milage to talk about to worry about the fuel.
According to my trusted mechanic they are fairly easy to look after with parts being reasonable, is there anything engine wise to look out for?

But the thought of a 30-something in an X Type diesel really does sound wrong.

If you aren't secure enough to own a particular car then no, you aren't old enough to own one.

17 is the right age for a Jag. (If you can insure it) You're more likely to cherish it than a Citroen saxo and you'll get your head around what 'real' motoring is all about.
