Modern equivalent to a Capri ?

Ok, you are a seventies working class male, about 30, no kids but with a "Bird" in tow, decent job, much overtime, few quid in your pocket. Somehow get sent forward in time from 1973 in a reverse Ashes to Ashes style, you arive replete with flares, loud shirt, Jovan "Sex Appeal" after shave, leather jacket, tache and a fag in your mouth.

You need a car but you try the Ford dealer who said the Capri went out of production 27 years ago much to your dismay. You want a coupe, pretty sporty, quicker than average, where would you go to get the spiritual successor to a Capri, lets say a 3.0 GT.

What would fit the bill ?

I like to think of my 350z as the modern Capri.

Rear-wheel drive, a bit hairy-chested, good value for money and not a 'premium' brand.

3 series coupe. I had quite a few 3.0 and 2.8 capri's back in the late 80's, the E36 328 coupe I had 5 years ago reminded me of them, but much better.

Can't think of anything else that isn't ludicrously expensive or American that fits the bill really.

Focus ST, really, if you're looking for a near-ubiquitous but unpretentious affordable fast car.

Or, price excepted, a 330Ci, given how common they are now...

350Z is an impractical 2 seater., but is one of the few modern cats to retain the chest wig. Thing is, it's more of a successor to old TVRs and FR Lotuses.

Ford really should build their own successor to the Capri. How much would the originals have cost in todays money?

I think the only real spiritual successor to the 3.0S would be a 350/370Z as well, V6 engine, RWD and not overly expensive to buy or run.

And more than half of the cars advertised as "Coupés" are just 3 door hatchbacks?

It's a sad time for exciting cars unless you have £50k + to spend. Or you just buy something old.

pug RCZ, too underpowered and girly?
