Why????
Dept. of Fair Trading sent in a bogus car with brakes that were legal. BIL told the driver the cars brakes were below the limit and were illegal..... therefore lining his own pocket with cash for work that wasn't required!
Just to let you know!

There was an investigation into a local Kwikfit after a car was MOT'd at my local independent testing station, it failed on a tyre so the owner took it to Kwikfit, they told her the shocks were leaking, brakes were dangerously low and all 4 tyres needed replacing. The owner contacted VOSA to complain that the MOT tester had missed all these things, VOSA told them to take the car back to the testing station before any work is carried out, they sent out one of their inspectors who found nothing wrong with all the items listed, they ended up with a heavy fine and lost their status as a testing station.

What action was taken against Kwikfit for advising a lot of items needed replacing unnecessarily?silverfoxcc said:
Am i reading this right?
The Testing station she went to was ok with the one tyre and the car passed.
It was Kwikfit who had their balls chewed, as they tried it on with the shocks etc needing replacing?
I read it that the tyre still needed doing but the list from Kwik Fit didn't - a little vague though. The Testing station she went to was ok with the one tyre and the car passed.

I thought the OFT only dealt with bigger fish, such as price fixing between energy suppliers. Surprised they went after a bit of unnecessary car maintenance.
Possibly after a complaint or two?OFTwebsite said:
The OFT's mission is to make markets work well for consumers. We achieve this by promoting and protecting consumer interests throughout the UK, while ensuring that businesses are fair and competitive.
I'd be very surprised if they had anything at all to do with the OP's story.Local Authority Trading Standards, on the other hand...

I had a recent problem with a garage local to me.
My campervan broke down and was rescued by a subcontractor of the AA. I let the subcontractor tow and take my van in to be 'fixed'.
After eight weeks of them trying to fix, they diagnosed it needed a new engine because compression was down on two cylinders. Not happy with this, so I went in and drove the van home - only to break down again some three miles away (low power and running dog rough)
Called AA again, different subcontrator came out and diagnosed the problem in two minutes. One jubilee clip to reattach the brake servo hose and all was good again.
Complained to the AA (although they don't approve garages anymore - wonder why?) and just got a polite letter back. I am still furious and don't know who else to approach.

Good to see their being kept on their toes. If only this happened more often we could have a little more trust in these places.
I went to a kwik fit and was advised I needed new front tyres as they were nearing the limit. When I agreed and pointed out it was a company car they changed their minds and said it wouldn't be authorised by the lease company and instead I should go back in around 5k miles or so.
