Potentially odd, paste related question...
Discussion
Hello.
Let's imagine for a moment that we wanted to add a set of aftermarket wheel arch trims to an old car. You know the ones - the rank, chrome anus strips that people nail to rusty wheel arches instead of getting them repaired.
But, for the purposes of this imaginary story, the wheel arches on this particular old car were actually in pretty good shape. Ergo; adding idiotic chrome trims might simply act as a kind of portable miniature reservoir to absolutely guarantee that said wheel arches rot to hell double quick.
So, with that in mind... If you were going to do it anyway, what might make a good "semi permanent" gunk to apply to the bodywork UNDER the stupid trim, in order to protect it from corrosion after the trims are fitted?
Some kind of anti corrosion paste?
Old engine oil?
Butter?
Surely SOMETHING could be added to a panel of old car, on and around the wheel arches, that would massively inhibit water based corrosion AND be easily removable or wiped off a year or two down the line, if the trims come off?
(For the purposes of this thread... "don't put the trims on" isn't an answer)
Thankings.

A more serious reply would be a thick coating of grease under there. The stuff you can buy in pots from any motorfactor will do and if it's covered from the driving force of the rain, should stay there. And obviously you can get it off with degreaser.
I was thinking grease, yes, although apparently waxoyl is removable with white spirits.......doogz said:

(Anyone ever removed waxoyl from car bodywork successfully?)
I did. With nitromors.(You never said anything about leaving the original paint behind)

3M automotive tape. Sticks like blood to a pillow. You'd need to apply it to the edges carefully to make a watertight seal. It holds the side scoops and rear spoiler on my Mustang.
I can't help feeling that any amount of carefulness would still leave it water penetrable, compared to, say, a paste or gunk of some kind,...Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
