Hire Car today - Pug 508 saloon, 1.6 Hdi.
Did not expect great things, but pleasantly surprised. Not too slow - bit sluggish on the get go, but very happy to cruise at 80+
Sadly it's economy is ruined by this, so averaged at 48mpg - slightly worse than my 5 year old 520D. and quite a bit slower.
Build quality was good. Felt solid, no rattles. Bloody stupid though, as the thing is huge, you can't see the boot, and no reversing sensors.
I'd always discounted these big cars with daftly small engines, but maybe not in the future.

Hired exactly the same model a few months ago - drove from Glasgow to Nottingham and back in the same day with it.
Like you say, no ball of fire but completely adequate. This one had done only 38 miles when I picked it up, might have felt slightly better once run in. Also found economy with cruise at 75mph most of the way to be wee bit disappointing, but it does only have 5 gears - might have benefited from a sixth cog for both economy and refinement reasons.
As a cheap, mass produced motorway hack or family lugger, I could quite easily live with it.

I know a guy who basically runs Taxi's on a "Pay as you go" deal. You rent the car off him and keep any extra. I gather they do pretty well out of it. He also maintains them and services the local Taxi's. He does not like the "Little" diesels in big cars. They do well on fuel but maintenance is more of a problem. The engines appear to be a bit marginal and if something goes wrong it's expensive and difficult to fix. At this time he advises his "runners" to stay clear.
