At what point does it become sensible/a requirement to change the screen?

I ask as I've a few chips none in the MOT area but today I had a very nasty stone chunk out of the screen passenger side. It was a huge bang as it hit I had kicked up from an incoming car (no one in front of me at all ) so 70mph one way ditto for me the other.

It's a big chunk sort of the size of a finger print and not too shallow either.

So do I just leave it or is it get the insurance to replace it (or do they not replace if damage is not in MOT fail area). Also how much does insurance go up by after a new screen? I believe my screen is >£600

Really pissed me off that's for sure.

Who's your provider? Fully comp? Had mine replaced for 75 quid and I'm insured with Aviva. Just spoke to Autoglass and they sorted it all out with them.

If you are worried about the mot side, what about taking it to a station and asking? If its legal I would leave it.
Then if it does crack one day, get it changed.

Fully Comp.
one of the large companies not a small website setup
Mot perspective it's not a fail

Even if its only £75 excess they do ramp up your premium so just curious as to how much as in effect it's a fault claim

Never affected my premium when mine was done. Had it done on two cars now. Might depend on the provider.

Not quite(ish). With Swiftcover you don't get any NCD for that year (ie if you're on 4 years it will still be 4 years at the end of the policy, it won't have gone up to 5). I know that's pretty much what you said but it was open to misinterpretation. Coincidentally I had my windscreen replaced today and am insured with swiftcover so read into it a little yesterday.

If the chip is smaller than a £1 coin then it will be repairable and a complete replacement is not actually needed, the sooner you act the better the result will be. Forget trusting Autoglass etc to try and repair it "free" as there is a hidden agenda that will saddle you with a new screen whether you want one or not. The risk is that you could end up with a £600 claim on your record just for thinking that they will just fill it in. There are far too many horror stories on PH from people who trusted their insurers recommended supplier and then regretted it when things have gone terribly wrong just because the insurer has gone with the cheapest supplier. If you wanted to replace the screen you do have the legal right to use who you want to do it ( screenman is very good and did my car and it was better than the original screen when he was finished ) but you must be prepared to pay for it first and reclaim it from the insurer. Dont be put off by them saying that they will only contribite £100 if you do that as that is a try on designed to steer you in the direction of their nominated supplier and is in contravention of the Competition Act 1998.

As some people have said the days of the "free repair" are coming to an end and many insurance companies are applying penalties to claims even for chips and any claim you make will have to be disclosed to your next insurer.

Repairing it will keep the vehicle original too and save your insurance for when it is really needed for a proper big crack.

The trend now is to just get it repaired at your own cost and not even involve the insurer. If you can post a pic of it next to a coin I would be glad to comment further and you are welcome to PM me or take a drive past wycombe.

Aviva + Autoglass replaced my screen when it cracked in July. My renewal in Sept was lower, despite having the glass claim in July, and a chip claim in April.

The woman on the phone said herself, that they don't take glass claims into consideration.

Why them?

Because, for many of us, they are the only windscreen company within a reasonable distance. And even if I did live near Barnet or High Wycombe my insurance company would only contribute a maximum of £100 to a replacement if I were to use anyone else.

With other options, I thought you might have some kind of relationship with them.

Swiftcover Is £65 excess on a replacement. And you only lose your excess entitlement for that year! Just had it done. If you are on 10 years NCB the following year you are still on 10 years NCB.

Had mine done on the X5 and it cost £75 quid and didn't affect the NCB. Was with Privilege IIRC.

The arrangement is designed for ease. The policyholder just presses a number to get a windscreen replaced; the insurer's nominated supplier gets all (or most of) that work and the underwriters save, save, save.

I personally wouldn't be happy to have a lot of those guys work on my car and I certainly wouldn't accept the cheap branded/shonky glass they are currently fitting.
