Home-made wheel dollys?

Apologies if there is a better section to post this in - I couldn't decide so just posted it in here as I'm sure it can be moved by a mod if deemed to be in the wrong place!

Need to get the car I'm breaking out of my garage and onto a truck, but it doesn't have a steering rack or suspension anymore and isn't positioned straight enough in the garage. :doh:

Would rather not pay a fortune for a set of wheel dollies as I don't plan on making a habit of this kind of activity, so has anybody ever made their own up?

If so, any tips?? I'm thinking a couple of old skateboards might work?

skateboards wouldn't turn very well as they steer by leaning to one side or the other and using the steering on the car wouldn't work...

you need something with casters really, im afraid.

I think that you may even be able to rent some from your local tool hire place I've certainly seen some in their inventory.

A bit of a fart about but could you not just put the suspension and steering back on loose, then take them off again once it's out? Assuming of course you still have them.

Have used those bread basket things around the back of a supermarket a couple of times, the ones with the bigger wheels work best, depends how heavy the car is though. Have you tried just using a trolley jack? Thats how we normally drag cars about.

I've seen a car driven on a trolley jack before.

The car had front end damage, so the wheels wouldn't turn. 'Fortunately' it was rear wheel drive, so they jacked the front end on a big trolley jack under the engine, and then reversed the car dragging the jack along. The car was already a write off, so didn't matter too much. Just make sure you're stood clear!

I was going to suggest this as well, as long as you can deal with the damage to the floor and the shell isn't being sold on.

Renting them is a good shout - any ideas where would have them?? Been round a couple of local garages but none seem to have them - they all just go for the trolley jack idea!

Space in the garage is quite tight, so the trolley idea might not be ideal - but if it comes to it then I'll get a few mates round and give it a go. Dragging it across the driveway is apparently out of the question (according to mother... It is her driveway after all! ).

I work in a Sainsbury's, asked tonight and we only have a couple of those in the shop. Only get new ones in when the old ones are damaged - boss didn't seem keen on me trying to wiggle a car about on them!

I think speedy or jewsons may have done them, or you could say nice things to your local classic/specialist garage as they are more likely to have them as they will be doing restos.

I have used trolly jacks in the past but have a set of wheel supports from Machine Mart now.
I once dragged a wheel less Sierra onto a trailer but hey who care about damaging a rusty old Ford shell.

I used a tractor last time I was in this position, hauled extended reach through the windscreen lift and pull, not really available to everyone though!

Btw, to drag it u can use 3 logs, that'll save ur driveway if u ain't bothered about the shell.
