If you could only drive cars from one particular year?

If you could only drive cars from one particular year which would it be? The car(s) had to be on sale at the the time.

My mate just asked me this question, and wanted to know why?

2006 was my answer - Golf GTI MK5 + R32, Audi RS4 and the M3 e46 were all on sale at the time.

What would your favorite year be?

I've often thought that owning a car from the year of my birth would be nice,which was 1964. The Ferrari 250 GTO,Aston DB4 Gt, Cobra 289 etc could all be in the stable so too could Lotus Cortina,Mini Cooper,911, s11a Land Rover and no doubt all sorts of exciting Alfa's,Citroen's and cars from British marques long since disappeared . So yes I could definitely live with a fleet of just 1964 cars for the rest of my life. Just need at least £1 million for each year of my life to pay for a couple of them!

FD RX7tt, NSX, mk1 MX5, E34 M5, R32 Skyline GTR, S13 Silvia (yes, I know, but I like them), F40, mk2 MR2, Volvo 850R/T5, 100mpg Citroen AX Diesel, Lotus Carlton, Delta Intregrale and maybe an unregistered Quattro or Alfa SZ from '91.

Everything from supercars, touring cars, estates, eco shopping cars, fast saloons, coupes and rally cars. I'd be happy with that lot as a 12-14 car garage. I wouldn't even miss my Elise with an NSX and F40 to play with.

1992 is very tempting, but I'd have to go for 1993. So many good (or interesting!) cars out or available that year:

Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 & 968 TurboS, Merc 190e EvoII & E500, Maserati Shamal, BMW E34 M5 3.8, Ferrari 348 Competizione & 512TR, Lotus Esprit Sport 300, Alpine A610, Clio Williams...

Love this era, and still have the Performance Car mags to prove it

You can add Griff, VR6 Corrado and RS2 (I think?) to that too

RS2 was 1994 I'm afraid. In 1992 Porsche were busy building 500E/E500s for Merc. And a couple of 911 & 968s

We need more of this sort of thing though, like Porsche-built Mercs and Audis, Lotus Carltons, etc. I know it doesn't really make financial or marketing sense in these days of AMG, RS and VXR, but that whole cross-over of manufacturers produced a real shot in the arm for the motoring enthusiast back in those recession-hit days

Since you mention it- those vauxhalls were mad fun, went to hell and back and still wanted more. Had several new more recently as company cars and been quite awfull in terms of build quality and reliability.

Amazing how most of the Astras GTEs and XR3i have died out since the late 80s, whereas a good few Golf and 205 GTis have soldiered on somehow

Mind you, it's been a long time since I've seen a Jetta 16v!

Was at a car meet a couple of weeks ago, and someone turned up with a pristine, 45k mile 405 Mi16

Yes a rare few have survived. Always good to see.
I think many were wrecked by boy racers, nicked or generally thrashed to death. When they dropped to a price boy racers could afford that was their death sentence.
I did see a stunning XR4i near salisbury last weekend.

Yes, a shame, but then it makes it even more more of an event when you see something out on the road that is now rare and has been well-maintained

Maybe it's nostalgia (just realised I sound like Thora Heard there! ), but I've so much more interest in cars from the mid-80s through to the mid-90s than any other. With just a couple of noteable exceptions, I feel my ultimate garage would contain cars solely from this period

I can think of nothing on the market in the last few years that I have an overwhelming desire to buy either now or in the future. C-class Black or a 997 GT3/GT2 RS would be nice, but give me a 964 Turbo 3.6 any day. Quite like seeing and hearing a Focus RS driving by, but doesn't compare to a 3-door Cossie or an Integrale for me. Is it design? Too much modern technology? I really can't explain it

On the PS3, GT5 gives you a free car from your year of birth on your birthday. Unfortunately I only got a triumph spitfire yesterday and not the countach i was hoping for
