Thought I'd throw this out to the collective PH wisdom....

Just re-organised my garage so I've now got 2/3rds of the way to achieving motoring nirvana on a budget.

Picked up a 54 plate MX-5 off a friend and an 'S' plate Micra 1.3 for town duties.

My head says to complete this picture I need another vehicle - probably a 4x4 of some description.

Budget is £1-1.5k and I am flexible on suggestions, although I wouldn't want a Freelander.

What would you get?

Thanks.

I know nowt about 4x4s but everyone in this part of rural lancs seems to have Daihatsu Fourtracks from the eighties / nineties.

Surely a 4x4 based car would be more useful on a regular basis?

I'd have a look at a Skoda Octavia 4x4, Subaru legacy, Audi A4 quattro or if you are lucky find yourself a BMW 525IX - rather rare and worth a few PH points in my opinion

A bit of a oddball choice if you do prefer a traditional 4x4 but a bit of a soft roader is a Toyota Rav4 or Honda HR-V

Classic Impreza turbo!
Or is that too close to the mx5s hooning territory?

I'd be on the lookout for an early 90, could find one that'd been fitted with a 200tdi for 1.5k, especially if you're not fussed on cosmetics!

South African guy I know swears by Suziki 4x4's. Not the big puffy wide-wheeled gay ones, but the standard car version. Low frills but reliable and go-anywhere.

Suzuki vitara if small is ok, v8 disco or classic rangie for rusty smiles and total off road ability. Alternatively, trooper or shogun for total reliability.

Lastly, jeep Cherokee for a mixture of the above!

I think the Grand Cherokee are great value for money, they drive well, very comfortable, good stereo and lots of creature comforts. I picked one up a few years ago for £450 all it needed was a ball joint for the mot, took me about 3 days to clean it up though.

For me it would be:]

Jeep Cherokee XJ
Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ
You may get a high mileage WJ for £1500.

Go for a 4litre and if you can get one on LPG your laughing.
