What did I see?

First I noticed a green heavy recovery Volvo on army plates,but in a style more commonly seen towing civilian arctics or coaches. Whilst still pondering what use the army would have for such an expensive but severely limited bit of kit ,I came upon a Police Discovery escorting a curtain side artic. The artic had military number plates the Disco didnt't. No markings on the lorry and the Disco was in reflective livery with POLICE (not military) and had CCTV equipped and possibly a crest on the rear side window. Didn't seem to be any other vehicles with them , but obviously could have been plain ones.

So,what is so important that the army need to have a recovery vehicle following it, but a relatively low profile? The obvious answer would be some sort of nuclear st, but would that be on a busy motorway at 10.00 am?

Could be nuclear kit, but not radioactive - if that makes sense - parts/components that you don't want getting nicked for scrap, or damaged if there is a breakdown - that have a long lead time for production - with the recovery truck to recover the vehicle to a safe area?

You kind of answered your own question, time of day down to tieing in with timings for other modes of transport probably.

If so then it is part of the fleet of vehicles used to transport nuclear warheads.

I once came across a convoy of several of these on the A34 heading North past Oxford. Police motorcycle outriders closing each junction before they reached them. They were accompanied by a fire engine, breakdown truck, spare tractor unit, several police cars and a police minibus.

The MOD has its own Police force. You are most likely to see them guarding important MOD sites, Nuclear convoys etc. They are very different from our RAF Police, RMPs and the Navys MPs.

Any reason why they use matt green lorrys ect? seems like they're making quite a big song and dance about it when using civi lorrys ect would go unnoticed?

The big bomb was in the Tescos half a mile back, sitting between the cat food and chicken Kievs.
