Where have all the bargain drivers cars gone?

Is it just me or have all the really desirable drivers cars pretty much vanished? let me explain. I want to change my 06 ibiza cupra for something older, softer, ideally simpler and with a nice soundtrack and also keep my budget down to something like 3K. Now trawling through the classifieds theres hardly anything decent left to buy. Where are all the unmolested 106 gti's 306 rallyes mk2 golfs etc etc gone? A friend has a theory they all got sold off under the scrappage scheme or are in storage somewhere to appreciate......is this the case?
Either stored, killed, modified when they get to sub £5k or turned into track/race cars.
They are out there you just need to hunt hard and think outside the box a little.

Sounds like you need a nice E36 328i. Plenty of those about...If you're after a nice 328i, halve the budget

There are loads out there, you just need to avoid anything with a scene tax, some half decent stuff languishing cheaply in the classifieds.
Proton Satria GTI can be had for pennies and is widely regarded as a decent hatch.
As has been mentioned, 3 series, numbers around and a big petrol engine mean that they are still good value.
Porsche 944, still cheap.

328i is genuinely worth a look imo. Unless you're planning on sticking the M3 on a classic policy I found it potentially A LOT more to insure than the '28.

It doesnt have to be a hatchback mind, i would love a corrado and was interested in a vr6 golf and i'm tempted by a toledo v5 or octavia vrs. it must be my demographic then. I have considered the 325i as a decent alternative but not really looked at the 328i for some reasonIf you're after a nice 328i, halve the budget

Until it breaks.Loads of 306 GTI6's around for under a grand. minen is up on ebay and while it needs work it has MOT until april and is currently on a highest bid of £310! Most of the cheaper stuff won't be on AT and is more likely to be on gumtree or owners clubs websites/forums.
The Citroen Saxo VTS is always worth a look IMO. Well within the 3K budget, just have to look hard to find an unmolested one. I've had a Saxo VTS and a 106 Rallye S2. Have to say I never really bonded with the Rallye and found the VTS far superior.
All that has been said about the 328i I guess, but an E30 325i is a good shout too.
Something newer perhaps? Higher mileage Panda 100HP's have now dropped to the 3.5K mark...
