My car was registered 8th March 2001- so VED has gone up

Bit of a weird one. Since I've owned the E38 2.8, VED has always been £220. This year it's £270 on the renewal form.

I rang the DVLA today and they say as the car is registered on the 8th March 2001 I am a week after the 2001 cut off and therefore am taxed based on Co2.

How unlucky is that? Also why have they only just put tax up? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just accept this and move on? Car was built Jan 2001.

Nothing you can do I'm afraid. 'Y' reg cars onwards are measured on global-no-warming-since-1996 gas.

If it makes you feel any better, my Monaro, built in Dec '04 but not registered 'til after the 23/03/06 cut off, attracts £475pa, as does our lass's Jag.

Doesn't make me feel any better btw- they have us by the short and curlies one way or the other. Tempted to get a pre 72 Merc...

Like your style- assuming the journey each day is short? I worry about using the Camaro daily as I may loose that magic (and it leaks, and I don't like parking in public car parks, and it's too low to be practical...)

I haven't got a '70 Trans-am, but would love one as a hobby/weekend car. Problem is, I like my Monaro in that role too much at the moment.

Get hold of the build date from the Vin number and argue that it has a plate on it that makes the car look newer than it is, This worked with one of my cars that did not qualify for free road tax yet was built in 1972, it was running about with 75 plates on as that was when it was registered.

I appealed with build date proof from the manufacturer and got an age related plate.
