Problem with the ADAC, world war on horizon.

I shall keep this short.
Me and my mother are both with the ADAC. Ive been a member for a year or so. My mother paid for everything, and sorted out all the correspondance so I dont have access to the details right now.
Basically I need my membership to stop, because I shall be in canada for the next year or so. They arent letting me terminate my membership on the basis that I didnt write a handwritten letter to them a few months in advance and are now clamouring for money for this years membership. My mother wrote an email to them a while back explaining I wasnt going to be around but they said the email was not enough. Ive been very busy and also not quite aware of the situation otherwise I would have written the letter, but thats besides the point.
As far as I am concerned, the first year membership was paid, and the outstanding payment for the second year has not been paid, but membership is not wanted anyway. I told my mother not to pay anything, because it would be money down the drain but she is concerned that they are going to take it from her or get the law to take it from her, because german laws are as im told, diferent to UK ones. As it is a company operating within the UK im not sure that any german laws can be upheld here.
Basically, my problem is that the ADAC simply wont invalidate my membership and stop hassling my mother for money, on the basis that under terms of agreement, I need to write a written letter with my signature on it.
To further infuriate us, they are replying to my mothers emails with my name, rather than hers.
If anyone could let me know where we stand from a legal point of view, it would be appreciated.
