I'm rebuilding my garage at the moment, and after lots of looking around I've decided to go for polished concrete. The only disadvantage over tiles that I could find is that it's rather cold so sit on in the winter if working under the car.

You talking ceramic tiles or those plastic ones?

After doing a lot of research I am leaving my garage as sealed concrete, the plastic tiles can hold water underneath, and then produce a musty smell. Along with them being difficult to clean when oil etc is dropped on them.

I've just received my sample from Mototile, so far very pleased with what they have sent.

I'd imagine ceramic is a bad idea - drop anything on it and it'll either break the tile or whatever you drop.

That what was my main concern.

I've had foam tiles in my garage for the last 3 years.
They have endured working on the car with jacks and axle stands, painting and various woodwork with tools being dropped on several occasions. A quick sweep and a going over with a wet mop and they come up like new.

These are the type I used, available in various sizes:

I have red 4 inch square quarry tiles across the floor and up the walls to thigh height, they look great and are easy to keep clean.
I have some rubber matting for the floor in front of the bench just to make it less tiring and in case I drop something with finished edges or faces on it.

A neighbour of mine has ceramic tiles on his garage floor. Been down a few years and still looks tremendous. No breakages to date. However, he has a slight lip up into his garage, just about an inch or so, and when its wet it's a nightmare getting the car in, especially in reverse, as the wheels skate all over the tiles. So, yes, ceramic is a bad idea!

I have most of my garage floor carpeted. It was very cheap carpet - foamback from Carpetright. I just bought a roll and lugged it home. Concrete floor was treated to two coats of Wickes garage floor paint before I put it down. Nice to work on, OK it does get messy when I spill oil on it but I cover the worst areas with cardboard.

I thought I wanted tiles too but went to Toolstation and paid about £25 for enough paint to do the whole garage. Its cheap but does the job. Easy to sweep and get water out too if needed.

When you say "these are the type", do you mean they are the same things or just similar? They look good value but being foam I'd worry they may crumble. Do they slip or move on the floor when you move your car around?

Hi this is what i use in the summer months when just parking the car up great to do small jobs on the car. When winter comes i lift and store them in the loft then bring my ramp in to the center of the garage so i can do real dirty jobs.

They seem to be sturdy, not broken up but if you have water issues in your garage then they might trap water. I have a corner in mine that a little water after days of very heavy rain so i just lift a few Squares and it drys in no time.

We've got plastic ones in the garage. Been brilliant over the year we've had it. Not noticed any water problems (we mop the floor regularly) and it seems impervious to oil or other garage fluids. It did mark a little with things like jacks being used but it seems to push the dents back out over night once the weight is taken away.

I looked at these but thought they wouldn't be good when driving the car in/out in the wet every day?
Could be worth a try then...

Interesting opinions as I've just 'floored' by garage and considered all of the above. In the end, I settled for (cheap) carpet tiles - I bought some grey and black tiles from eBay and stuck them down in a chequered design (after first sealing the concrete of course). As I mainly use my garage for detailing my car, my thoughts are that carpet is a warmer and safer surface to work on and with cheap tiles, if they get too dirty or damaged I can simply pull specific tiles up and stick replacements down (I did buy some spare wink).

I've only just done it so don't have any specific pictures but heres another photo zoomed in to give an idea of how it looks. (Note - the cream carpet you can see to the right of the opening is just an erroneous mat and not part of my design!)

The whole lot cost around £200 for a double garage.

Next job is to have that bloody centre pillar removed and replace it with one big door.... why developers design two small doors in double garages beggars belief (annoyingly, they also fitted two lintels that rest on the centre pillar so I'm having to have to have that replaced too frown

Plastic floor tiles are best for a garage. The better quality ones have a tight fitting joint that virtually eliminates any water ingress so water can drip off the car or allowing them to be mopped.

From the manufacturer's info - "Should water get underneath the chemicals in PVC act as a natural biocide that prevents the growth of the bacteria that would make the water smell and secondly any moisture under the tiles will evaporate back up through the joint because the temperature above the tiles is almost certain to be higher than that under the tiles."
