Car from the year you passed your test - realistic version

OK, first you go to this site and put in your current gross salary and you will get the equivalent "worth" for the year you passed your test:

Next, given this is a gross figure, take half off and then try and find the price of cars from that year (easier said than done).

For me, my salary would have been around £8800 and a Capri 3000S was £4327.

Accordingly, my choice would have been:

I did consider the Chevette 2300HS but think the Ford had a slightly more sohisticated look and a bit more boot space. I also considered an Alfasud Ti which I tried to persuade my father to buy in 1977 but he declined. The other nomination was the Mustang-styled Celica 2000GT but in 1977, they had moved to the cleaner Liftback.

I thought I could have had a Range Rover in 1981, but they were bloody expensive even then( £13,500+£1000 for aircon ) so I'd have to settle for a 109'' Station Wagon at £7,000 as long as it was a 12 seater otherwise £7,500 for the 10 because it had 'special car tax' added.

I could just about have stretched to a last-of-the-line Ford Capri 280 Brooklands. But why would I want to sp*nk half my salary on a 20 year-old design like that?

No-one's going to be interested in a low run old 2 door Ford in the years to come.
