What diesel estate
Discussion
I know, a boring what car thread - sorry.
With a budget of £5-6500 for a diesel estate, manual, reasonably quick on A roads and with a comfortable interior that isn't French or a Vauxhall. I'm guessing I'll be looking at around 80K but depending on how reliable the car is I can live with a bit more.
A quick nosy through the classifieds throws up this list - is there anything I've missed or any head and shoulders above the rest?
E46 330D
Audi A6 2.5TDi Allroad Quattro
Jaguar X-Type 2.2D Sport
I'm sure that list could be longer but I'm drawing a bit of a blank. Any thoughts?

I assume you mean E46... If looking at A6, then really a fair BMW comp would be a 5 series - how big does it need to be?
Manual kills it as a lot of these type of cars tend to be auto...

Passat is too similar to what I already have. I'm not keen on diesel Saab's, isn't it the same engine as the Vectra? And I used to have a craving for Volvo's but the interior of the V70 etc just seems a little basic and lacklustre, much as a D5 V70 should tick the boxes.
I didn't think a 5 series would be in budget but I have to admit that I'd prefer the extra space of a 5 series over a 3 series if I can get one within budget, and a quick search shows a few possibilities.

Quick update with a quick question:
I'm deciding between a E90 3 series and E90 5 series at the moment, there seem to be pro's and con's to either choice but really I think I need to get out and test drive a few to make my mind up. My last question is gearboxes.
According to the figures I've seen there isn't much difference in economy or performance between manual and auto boxes. In real world terms is there much difference in either economy or performance, or are any of the gearboxes particularly prone to expensive repairs? I'm still veering towards a manual - I've always had manual's and am quite comfortable to remain that way. But there are a lot of auto's on the market.
Oh, and the budget is creeping up slightly - but only up to £7500.

Autos do hit the economy a bit. You'll struggle to find many manual 5's - and I would say for resale the 5 needs to be auto.I'm deciding between a E90 3 series and E90 5 series at the moment, there seem to be pro's and con's to either choice but really I think I need to get out and test drive a few to make my mind up. If you want great economy then a manual 320d will do 50mpg+ all day long.
Dont rule out a 520d - 180bhp, not as lacking as you would think.
