No, I'm not saying anybody should boycott Shell/Texaco/Esso/etc. While watching a video on the ol' TubeYou I took a quick screenie of this:



While bound to bring back nostalgia to most (I must admit, I started driving in 2007 and my first fill up was for 92.9p a litre, remember it getting as low as 89.9p a litre), anybody got pictures of "cheap" fill ups? Perhaps something to entertain the late nighters before we hit the hay.

Last fill-up (on Sunday) was for 57 litres at £1.49.9, cost a lovely £86. That'll last me about 275 miles, fking fantastic. I'm already down to half a tank and I've only driven 3 days' worth.

ETA - win a virtual pint on me if you successfully deduce what programme or car that's referring to. Double virtual pints if you get both.

I passed my driving test march '99, petrol was in the 50p a litre region back then.

The only 2 occurrences known of a particular problem which happened to my and someone elses car were whilst both had been using tesco's 99 ron fuel.

I'll stick to shell v power and not replacing the engine thanks.

I can remember it only being 75p per gallon in 1979 used to cost me £1.00 to fill up my FS1-E Yamaha fastped in cluding two shots of oil wish I still had it given its economy

While it's pretty much a given that most PH topics will turn into an unrelated argument, I'd have liked this thread to run for more than 11 posts before getting into a discussion about the merits of Tesco petrol. Oh well!

(FWIW I've used Momentum 99 in loads of my cars. STi, VXT, M3, Evo, 911, none of them complained because of the 99 RON stuff).

Taken in the 60s. For the youngsters, 4/6 equates to 22.5p in today's money, and that was the price of a gallon which makes it 4.95p a litre!!!
BP Super was the equivalent to 4*. (BP Regular was 2*, Blend 3*, Super 4* and Super Plus was 5*)

You sure about that? I passed Feb' '98 and bought my first car about May '98. I'm sure it was 66.9p/l at its cheapest back then.

My 309SR (XU5 carb-fed engine) laps up Momentum99 ; my MG1600 (R-series, Allegro/Maxi derived with twin Webers) hatesthe stuff .

Yet Sainsburys Super aka BP Ultimate 97RON is the preferable fuel (in terms of smooth running/driving) for the MG (the 309's engine will burn any available petrol, it's not fussy) and I believe the "Super" petrols in the UK are ethanol-free ... Funny, that !

No, he's right. I'd just started working in a filling station in Jan 99 and unleaded was just touching 50ppl then. Diesel was 2ppl dearer.

Incidentally, that's quite riveting as they go into cost (both "in period" and 2011-equivalent) and break out tax and VAT. It's the first government report I've seen in ages that's actually clear, detailed and useful.
