MK1 A3 Sport or Mk4 Golf GTI, which daily diesel ???

I just taken a job which requires me to drive 40 miles across country mostly B roads on a daily basis and I'm considering a little german oil burner as my prefered method of transport. I just thought I'd grasp people thought on the two front runners at the moment.

Ideally I'd want something with a little refinment, hence the suggestion of both sport level models. I have £3kish to spend and these two models would drop right into my bracket.

I need something to return decent mpg but will prove fun in the lanes when need be.

Throw in any other suggestions

Nope. It's fitted with the 1.9 pd TDi engine (130 bhp, 230 lb/ft) as fitted to the A3 and Golf mk4.

In that case, take a look at the Fabia mentioned, if you must have something VAG flavoured.

As a different suggestion though, how about an Alfa 147 JTD? There must be plenty around for your budget.

The Golf Mk 4 isn't particularly drivers car-ey.

It sags and wallows in corners like Nick's mum.

For a bit of fun on B roads I'd suggest a tdci Mk1 Focus, you'd get a very clean late model for that and it'd be a much better steer than those you mentioned, particularly in Zetec spec. They are quite refined too.

Seat Ibiza/Cordoba 1.9 PD130? both have the rather hard sporty suspension and larger brakes than the regular models, handle ok, good value but wind noise can be an issue.

Worth looking at Polo TDi sport 100 1.9 much better to drive than the golf.
