Just worked it out for the Passat, comes to 152%

Winners for highest (cheap cars chewing lots of fuel) and lowest (expensive garage queens). Only rule is you can't have a zero (ie for cars that have not moved)

52x £75 = £3900

Value is approx £4k

3900/4000 x100 = 97.5% per year

Edited to add that with an annual mileage of about 10k with fuel @ £1.42 per litre it averages about 16mpg

I own a car that does 50mpg. But then it is a cheap shed and I am doing lots of miles at the moment. I'd say it was in the region of 450%.

Edit, I was considering buying something 'fun' recently to replace my old diesel passat. Wouldn't have cost much for what I wanted, but going on the owners forums what I was after averages high teens to low 20's mpg, so I'd have been looking at almost 10x the cars value in fuel per year. Add to that the top rate of VED and it quickly became a very unattractive prospect.

Fuel cost for a year =£2822

Funny you should say that. I was wondering what the numbers would be if I ran the 750 or XJR as my only car. I suspect wouldn't even begin to cover it.

Nearly x5 is the current highest.

I reckon we'll find a Pher annually putting in the magical x10 value of fuel to car!
My guess is some sort of international sales director with a £1.5k/mth car allowance hacking around Europe in a battered Pug 306 diesel in order to use the money to fund a racing hobby or something.

Thing is, for £500-3000 these old barges represent great VFM, and even teh fuel cost will pale into insignificance compared to the original owner's losses!
