I took the steering wheel off my car and disconnected the airbag, didn't have to wait 24hrs, more like 20 mins. I think the idea is that the battery has to be disconnected and there can't be any residual charge. Disconnect, try starting a few times, flick on and off lights, radio, make sure there's no charge. Then knock yourself out!

half an hour is usually adequate in the absence of advice from a manufacturer over a minimum time to allow charge to dissipate
Could always check with the service department of the vehicle concerned?
Don't place it face down when stored - face up and preferably away from anything likely to either ignite it, trip over it, tread on it etc etc.
When you reconnect the power after putting it back, it's generally advisable to not be sat right in front of it when you connect the battery or turn the ignition on, just to be extra cautious!

I've not had a problem before in just using the interior light to make sure things are drained.
I did hear that the connector is designed to discharge anything left over when you disconnect it, but I don't know if that's true. When you're messing with them just stay out of the line of fire..
