Would a 4x4 drive in 2WD have better mpg than in 4WD???

4WD adds transmission losses, so would be less efficient than 2WD.

Short answer is yes. Its simple science!

My old dear had a freelander, these are set to have permanent 4WD, but shes never off road with it, so i removed the rear the prop shaft.

It did weigh best part of about 20KGs+ but after it was removed, we saw around 8 MPG better.

Id say that was little down to the weight taken off, more to the less strain on the drive train.
