winter car - am I mad?

Hi All,

My 1990 mk2 Gti 8v has been on the road for all of 3 months (having been stored for 5 years). Did lots of things to get it looking and driving great again!....thanks for replying to all those topics over the last few months!!

I just can't bring myself to drive it.....now that the weather is changing !

So........I went an purchased a Mercedes E320 cdi Avantgarde(w211) estate of 2004 vintage!!

It has 150k on the clock with full history and am going to pick it up on Monday.

Am I mad?!?! Mrs Ice is going nuts!

Just spent loads of money and time getting the golf to look great and now a new banger to drive!

Sounds sensible to me. My Mk2 is tucked away for winter too

You need to use some man maths! It's far cheaper to run a banger than repair the damage done by a harsh winter to your immaculate Golf. Stress that point frequently after her complaints and I'm sure she'll start to understand/give up

Beautiful Golf! you definitely wont sell it again trust me (don't know if that was your plan or not). Speaking from first hand experience, you will love it over the winter and how useful it turns out to be, then next year you will find it loads of dirty jobs that it is perfect for and then next thing you know it will be winter all over again....

Not so. My dad's E240 on 17" AMG alloys and summer tyres handled snow perfectly well, even out in rural Scotland. Sure it was a little tail happy at times, but a couple of bags of cement in the boot meant that it never got stuck. His BMW 528i also handled it perfectly well, so this whole thing about needing f/4wd for winter is bks as far as I am concerned.

I would suggest some winter rubber on the Merc. My wife struggled to get up our road in our 2004 E320cdi Avantgarde estate (snap!) two years ago when it snowed... Although it does probably depend on one's PH driving prowess :-)

PS. Love the big bumper Mk2. Had a mk1 with P-slots for a while but didn't have the time to fettle it...
