I'm sure like me, many of you grew up in an era of ford escorts etc. 80's 90's. Now, most of them ended up meeting their end of life when the rust killed them. Engines and mechanics were cheap and easy enough to keep on the road.

So, do you think the regular-type cars from, say, the last five years will last? (rust-wise I mean). Are they better protected? I keep meaning to waxoyl my car, but I feel a bit blase. I don't think it will rust. But maybe in a couple of years time I'll turn around and find the scuttle panel rusted out or something.

Not maybe five years but have you seen a ten year old Ford Ka? My those things can rust, seems a few other early 2000s Fords can be a bit rust prone as well.

2001 / 2002 / 2003 BMW 3 series front wings rot like theres no tomorrow.

Rear wheel arches go too.

Seen an 06 Ford Focus ST with the rear arches going - just like the earlier ones.

Ford are by far the worst culprits in the modern age. You will NOT find a rusty 10 year old FIAT (that is still alive) or from any of the previous rust bucket manufacturers for that matter.

I've seen 3 year old MOT failures on rust from Ford

i find renaults don't rust they fall apart or have a major electrical meltdown. normally within 5 years.
so they are scrap way before rust gets anywhere near them lol.
A friend of mine has a 02 focus and it got an advisory on its mot for rust.
I've also heard of mk5 golfs rusting on the front wings due to the foam getting waterlogged behind the wings.

I had a2001 era MGF which I sold last year. 10 yrars old, a lot of those living outside, driven in winter, and the only rust was an untreated spec of a stone chip on the bonnet.

Built quality wasn't up to much, but the standard of paint finish was fantastic.

I have a '51 plate Skoda OCtavia VRS currently. I am all over it maintenance and servicing wise myself, so I know it from top to bottom. So far, there isn't even a hint of rust, anywhere. I think I might have read somewhere, unless I was dreaming, that they were galvanised? Not sure, but I'm happy with mine.

I've just recently bought a 2001 Honda S2000 though, cheap, with broken power steering, to repair and sell on.

Upon removing lots of bits from the engine bay, I am a little disconcerted to see a fair bit of rust on lots of the cross-members and spars inside. Nothing terminal, but a little more than you might be comfortable with maybe...

This.

Hadn't washed ours since August (mainly as we were on holiday for the whole month of September. Went out and washed it today and a whole load of new rust has appeared. Quite shocked by it.

It only has to last us a other 8 or 9 months then we are getting rid of it. Shame really as it's got less than 50k miles on it for a ten year old car.

I drive a 12 year old Mondeo ST24, not a hint of rust on her anywhere. Or tape holding the bumpers together. However, it is the exception to the rule and I'm rather proud of the fact.

Mk5 and 6 Golf apparently need wings replaced under warranty on a regular basis.

My 2005 Toyota Yaris is starting to rust underneath, just had to hit a few spots with some underseal. The Saab is spotless though.

No, because we've scrapped 10 year old fiats before they can rust any more.

FWIW, i replaced a front subframe on a brava when it was about 7 years old as I managed to accidentally push my thumb through what was left of it. The rest of the car wasn't much better.

Oddly enough my 25 year old Lancia is utterly impervious to rust. I've never seen an 8-32 afflicted by it.

Guess they learnt that lesson, shame no-one believed them.

Fiat, Lancia and Alfa do seem to be particularly good at avoiding the rot - even my S4 Spider is holding up better than a similarly aged MX5, for example.
