Cheap and cheerful or pricer and newer

I had an accident last week and I'm of the mind the car is going to be written off. Now, I'm hopeful of around 11-12K as the payout for the car and am in two frames of mind.

One, cheap car and run around in that and save the extra for a holiday I think the wife and I deserve.

Which way would you go. I had an E39 before and loved it, the Alpina is a bit special (if still a 320d).
