advice re selling

Having read numerous threads on here regarding the pitfalls of owning a modern diesel (118d with 90k) I have decided to sell it and get something a bit cheaper to run in order to save some cash to put towards a new business. Whilst it is a nice car to drive and economical, I am paying circa £600pa on a BMW warranty, mainly as I live in fear of the timing chain letting go (which is a well known fault with the N47 engine) and once I go over 100k it will become increasingly difficult to sell. The plan is to replace it with a £4k small car like a C1/Aygo bought from auction - I get a small motoring allowance from being a Councillor which should cover the running costs. Having worked in the motor trade, I previously always bought from auction and then sold privately so never lost very much although as I am now a private buyer, the buyers premium may well cancel out any savings. The other option (admittedly led by man maths) would be to buy a nice 924 or E30 (both cars I had in my youth) but I have struggled to find any decent ones...
Question is, does anybody have any recent experience with selling through ebay/autotrader etc? I have placed an advert on eBay, and was about to do likewise on AT but was surprised at the cost. I have never used PH but given it's not very expensive, it's probably worth a try.
