Car betwixed 4 and 6k

Thinking of replacing my daily (Citroen c4 diesel) and looking to spend between 4 and 6 maybe 7k.

Criteria?

Good Mpg a bonus
Comfy
Quiet
Bigger than the c4
Reliable.

So far I've thought:-

Toyota avensis
Skoda Octavia
Bm 5 series diesel
Audi a4 estate

Other than that, a bit stuck on ideas?

You could get all sorts with your budget but if you're just looking for something to travel in to get you from a to b then the octavia will do everything you want it to well, for less than the Audi or BMW.

The daily hack carries the kids, the dog, the shopping........ I've got the dry day car for the fun to drive bit.

Commuting doesn't allow fun to drive as
A roads are st
B speed averages 18 mph
C it's at a crawling pace

I that case I stick by my vote for an octavia. I like the way they look and they will do everything anything else will just as well but with more kit at a cheaper price.

I'm also a big fan of the Volvo V50, but only because of the way it looks - couldn't comment on what they're like to live with.

Turns out he does. Still, even if I had a nice car in the garage (I don't) I'd still want my daily hack to be envolving and not numb and dull.

It wasn't a critism by the way, just an observation.

I do have a very fun to drive car tucked in the shed, so a dull, boring daily is fine by me. As long as it does everything well that a child carrier does. Oh, one thing, no people carriers, and no 4x4 wagons, unless it a Quattro or suchlike. Needs to be 4 or 5 doors as well. Merc cdi, or vulva might be contenders too.

very nice, something like that would be in the running. also looking at the bm 525 and 530d's, but i dont know much about them, reliability etc????

how easy are the merc and bmw diesels like to live with day to day? i'd imagine comfy yes, but what about reliability.
iirc, merc went through a dodgy patch betwixed 2001-2005-6 on build and reliability.

any thoughts on these from owners?

looking briefly at the vulva forum. the diesels have some issues, esp 'lectrics and dpf!

wonder what the petrol ones are like? i'll do a bit of delving to see, but, it does look (sizewise, specs etc.....) spot on for me.
