Private plate change after car sold...?

I just sold my car, and as part of the sale the buyer agreed to allow me to transfer the private plate onto my other car at my convenience.
He also has his own private plate (currently on retention) that he wants to put on his new purchase.

Is there any way that this can be done in one swoop?

No, you'll need to tranfer the plate from the sold car to your other car and once this is done and the V5C is back he can put his retained plate on the car.

How many times does this get asked???

Complete the V317 to transfer your plate onto retention. The details on the form should be the NEW keeper, not the existing keeper.
Complete the retention certificate for the new number plate.
Drop the following into your local DVLA centre
V317 + cheque to put yours onto retention
V778 (+£25 cheque if the nominee name needs changing to the new keepers name)
V62 completed in box 6, 10 and signed by both in box 8.
MOT certificate if vehicle is over 3 years old

Done.
