What percentage of your salary did you spend on your car, or if you took a loan, what percentage of your monthly wage is going on repayments? I spent 12% of my salary on my car (money saved up), have my own home with a few years left and no kids.

There seems to be a lot of £25k plus cars parked up on driveways locally and I've always wondered just what you need to be earning to live comfortably with a house and kids, whilst driving something very nice.

My current car was about 75% of my gross years salary. I have built up to spending that much for about 15 years though.

How did you go about building up to that level? I'm assuming that the car must be pretty special for that so how do you find your standard of living with the running costs of the car? Are you concerned about servicing/running costs or do you feel that you're able to live comfortably?

Across the 4 vehicles that I currently own I spent around 11% of my annual salary.
All paid in cash as I can't abide credit.

I saved up over my adult life, Not had a car on finance since 2000. Buy cars cash, save up then next time get something a little bit more expensive. Its not that special its only an evoque.

Not concerned about costs at all really, I only have a small mortgage and no other debt at all.

i've thought about this a lot.

I guess it just depends on how many outgoings you have

mortgage, children, bills etc

and it always comes down to how people value money

I am always quite careful with money even though I have quite a lot more than most young people, no debt, no student loan to repay

on te other hand I know people who have little value of money and waste it on non essential, over priced and ridiculous things

It's not that often you see such milestones as a unique thread like this.
I've replied on pretty much every other '% vs salary' thread but this time ill decline - especially as this one is literally days ago.

Mine cost me 12.5% of my annual salary. However some of that was made up of the p/x value of my old car so the actual cash outlay for the car was 6.875%

Current car, less than 3%, in the past just over 100%, nothing ever financed.

The last one, just under 104% of take home pay. Current one, not so much - 41%.
